The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the more intriguing quarterback situations in the NFL going into the 2025 offseason. None of the quarterbacks from the 2024 roster are under contract for 2025, and the organization has an interesting decision to make when it comes to bringing back either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks have very different playstyles, but there is an obvious excitement around bringing Fields back over Wilson, due to his age and abilities as a runner.

Fields has had a rocky start to his NFL career, but he has shown a lot of promise. His improvements as a passer were clear during his six starts to begin the 2024 season, but Head Coach Mike Tomlin decided to replace him with Wilson once he became fully healthy. Wilson played well to begin his time with the Steelers, but he ended the season on a bad note as the team lost five consecutive games. It is still a mystery when it comes to which quarterback the Steelers will move forward with, but NFL insider Adam Schefter gave some insights on Pittsburgh's thought process on Thursday during an appearance on Get Up.
"Pittsburgh has expressed an interest in bringing him back and I think we start there because they've got first dibs on the guy," Schefter said. "But it has to make sense for both sides. And if there's a deal there that works for both of them, then they go ahead and do it. If not, then we start to flush out the options."
At one point during the 2024 season, it seemed like it was a sure thing that Wilson would be getting a multi-year, lucrative deal with the Steelers. They were 10-3, and Wilson was playing like one of the better quarterbacks in the league. Many were projecting that he would get a deal similar to Baker Mayfield's that he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2024 season, which came in at three years for $100 million.

Wilson's play to end the season was not very inspiring. The quarterback seemed to become hesitant to take shots with the football, and took many unnecessary sacks. His lack of mobility was on full display, where Fields would have likely been able to make some plays with his legs. The NFL is carried by quarterbacks that are able to extend plays, which is showcased by the two quarterbacks playing in Super Bowl LIX in Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes.
It should be safe to assume that a lot of the Steelers fan base would be upset if the team were to bring back Wilson in 2025. He would be more expensive than Fields, and the upside just isn't there. What was seen from Wilson in 2024 is about all he can provide, and it is hard to imagine the Steelers would be able to go on a significant playoff run with him at the helm.

Steelers' Russell Wilson Will Have Interest Elsewhere
Wilson spent the majority of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, and he played under Pete Carroll throughout his entire time in the Pacific Northwest. Carroll and the Seahawks parted ways following the 2023 season, and the coach took the 2024 season off. He was just hired as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2025 coaching cycle.
This opens the window for Wilson to reunite with his former head coach in Las Vegas, as the two had a lot of success together during their time in Seattle. The Raiders also interviewed Wilson's former Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell for their vacant offensive coordinator position, which would increase the likelihood of Wilson landing with the Raiders. However, Schefter did mention the Steelers will have first dibs on the quarterback. The organization can eliminate the possibility of him going to Las Vegas by getting a deal done before Wilson reaches free agency.
