Steelers Have A New Dark Horse Quarterback Candidate Emerging

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation will continue to steal headlines in the 2025 offseason. Of course, it starts with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. The Steelers are expected to work out a deal to keep one, but not both, in Pittsburgh for 2025. If that’s the case, they’ll still need to round out their quarterback room. The Steelers have some options in the 2025 NFL Draft, though many pundits believe it’s a weak class. They could also explore a trade for a backup quarterback to strengthen the position.

Steelers Owner Art Rooney II has emphasized that the team wants two quarterbacks with similar playing styles. One potential option who fits that formula is New England Patriots backup Joe Milton III. Milton, known for his big arm and athleticism, shares some similarities with Fields in terms of mobility and playmaking ability. According to Greg Bedard, there is growing belief that the Patriots will be open to trading Milton this offseason, making him an intriguing name to watch.

The Steelers could emerge as a dark horse candidate to acquire Milton, especially as they look to take more chances on young quarterbacks in their search for a true franchise leader. While Milton is still unproven at the NFL level, his physical tools and upside make him an interesting option for Pittsburgh’s quarterback room. If the Steelers decide to move on from Wilson and commit to Fields, adding a developmental player like Milton could be a strategic move to provide depth and potential future competition at the position.

"I thought the Patriots would hold off on entertaining a trade of Joe Milton, who was drafted in the sixth round (193rd overall) last year, for at least another season, but there’s increasing belief around the NFL that the Patriots are at least contemplating a trade of Milton this offseason," Bedard wrote, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London. "Again, I’m not saying he’s on the block right now, but the Patriots will likely consider it when everything settles with the front office and coaching staff."

Some NFL executives believe the Patriots could fetch a third-round pick in a trade for Milton. With the 2025 NFL Draft class widely considered weak, the Steelers might be better off pursuing a trade rather than gambling on an unproven rookie. If Pittsburgh is serious about adding Milton to its quarterback room, making a deal with New England could be the smarter move over drafting another developmental quarterback in a questionable class.

Milton was never viewed as a future franchise quarterback in New England, especially with the Patriots investing in the young and exciting Drake Maye. However, he made the most of his opportunity in the final game of the season, delivering an impressive performance that significantly boosted his trade value. That breakout showing is why teams are now viewing him as an intriguing option.

Steelers Might Want To Give New England A Phone Call About Joe Milton III

For the Patriots, the best time to cash in on Milton is now while his stock is high. Given his strong final outing, New England has a chance to maximize its return before his value potentially declines. If the Steelers are interested, they may need to act quickly before another team swoops in.

In a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in an otherwise meaningless game, Milton put on a jaw-dropping performance. He completed 75.9% of his passes for 241 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for another score.

Despite the surprising nature of his outing, many pundits remain cautious, given the circumstances. However, Milton’s ability to make some extraordinary plays in that game has caught the attention of many. For the Steelers, it might be worth reaching out to the Patriots to explore the possibility of adding him to their quarterback room.
