Steelers Tabbed To Ink Blossoming NFC Wide Receiver To Ridiculous Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a ton of holes throughout the entire roster, and that became evidently clear towards the end of the 2024 campaign. The quarterback situation is still up in the air, and the wide receiver position is just as much of an issue as it was during the 2024 offseason. Pittsburgh was aggressive on the trade market to try and land a high-impact wideout, but the organization was stuck with Mike Williams at the trade deadline. General Manager Omar Khan and the rest of the front office should be looking to make some additions at the position in free agency.

The top two wide receivers in Pittsburgh going into the 2025 offseason are George Pickens and Calvin Austin III. Austin made strides during the 2024 season, but he should not be relied upon as a top-two option in the passing attack, and Pickens' future in Pittsburgh is very much in question.

Once March rolls around the fan base will be looking for the franchise to start making some additions at wide receiver, and an intriguing name that is expected to be available is Dyami Brown of the Washington Commanders

Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team recently wrote an article discussing top free agents at the position and their top landing spots. The Steelers are considered one of the best teams for Brown to sign with, but Valentino projects the receiver will sign a three-year deal worth $50 million, with $18 million guaranteed.

"Brown's downfield explosiveness and youth (25 years old) are huge positives in a market flooded with aged veterans on the downswing." Valentino wrote. "With speed being a constant premium, Brown is the perfect player that teams can offer a huge contract filled with fake money that only conveys performance-based incentives."

The deal Valentino projects Brown to receive would be incentive-based, but the number is still utterly ridiculous. Brown was drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and the young receiver has only hauled in 59 passes for 789 yards and four touchdowns over four seasons. He has shown some promise, but his lack of production does not warrant the contract that is being proposed, no matter how many incentives are included.

Commanders' Dyami Brown scores a 75-yard touchdown during the 2022 season.

According to the reliable sports business platform Spotrac, Brown's market value currently sits at $1.9 million per season. They project he will sign a one-year deal worth that amount, which means Pittsburgh should stay away from any proposed deal similar to the one Valentino wrote.

Brown was dynamic for Washington during its playoff run at the end of the 2024 season, as he hauled in 14 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown. This may force some organization to pay him more than he is worth, but the lack of consistency throughout his career is too concerning to make a large financial commitment.

Steelers Will Have Plenty Of Options At Wide Receiver During The 2025 Offseason

Pittsburgh will undoubtedly be active in looking for wide receiver help, and a name that will be talked about is Cooper Kupp. The Los Angeles Rams made their intentions to trade the triple-crown winner clear, and the Steelers could be a good landing spot. Kupp is an aging star and he certainly is not the player he used to be, but he could be a good second option and leader for the offense.

There are also a ton of notable names at the position that will be available in free agency. Some older options include Stefon Diggs, Amari Cooper, and Keenan Allen. However, the top target for the entire league will be Tee Higgins. A lot of teams will be interested in Higgins, but the Steelers need to be aggressive in pursuing the 26-year old.
