Steelers Quarterback Plans Exposed As Adam Schefter Reveals When The Deal Will Get Done

The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation has been a hot topic ever since Russell Wilson and Justin Fields arrived in the Steel City for the 2024 season. Both quarterbacks had opportunities to prove their worth, each showcasing both strengths and weaknesses that leave the Steelers with a major decision for 2025. Now, with both Wilson and Fields set to hit free agency, Pittsburgh must determine which quarterback to invest in moving forward.

Fields is the younger and more electrifying option, and he’s also expected to be significantly cheaper than Wilson. That’s why many Steelers fans are pushing for the team to extend Fields and give him a full season as the starter in 2025. While that appears to be the most likely outcome, reports suggest that at least one major decision-maker in Pittsburgh is strongly in favor of keeping Wilson, creating serious controversy.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to share what he’s hearing about Pittsburgh’s quarterback plans. Schefter dropped some intriguing information about who might be under center for the Steelers in 2025—and when that decision will be made.

"It's tough to go into free agency to go add to your offense when you have no idea who's playing quarterback," Schefter said. "And that's why I think they're gonna spend this week working on getting a deal done with either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson. I would imagine Justin Fields is first up in the pecking order. We'll see if they can get something worked out there. If not, it's easy to pivot onto Russell Wilson and we'll see how this works out."

Schefter isn’t entirely certain who the Steelers' quarterback will be, as behind-the-scenes free agency discussions and negotiations are incredibly complex. However, he believes Fields is the team's top option. 

If those negotiations don’t go as planned, Pittsburgh could still pivot back to Wilson. Schefter also expects a decision to be made soon, giving the Steelers much-needed clarity as they look to strengthen their offensive roster.

"But I would think Pittsburgh is determined to try to get one of these quarterback deals done in the coming days so that it has some clarity going into free agency," Schefter said.

The Steelers have several major issues to address heading into the 2025 season. First and foremost, the defense didn’t meet expectations. But the most glaring problem, which has persisted for several seasons now, is the offense. The Steelers lack true playmakers outside of star wide receiver George Pickens. 

This became painfully clear when Pickens missed three games with a hamstring injury during the 2024 season. While Pickens is undoubtedly a tremendous talent, the Steelers are asking a lot of him to carry the offense without more support.

This is why the Steelers are expected to make some significant moves in free agency to bolster their offense. However, one of the biggest hurdles they face is the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position. It’s difficult to make impactful decisions about the offense when the most crucial position on the field remains in limbo.

Steelers Expect To Make Quarterback Decision Very Soon

That’s exactly why Schefter expects the Steelers to make a decision on their quarterback sooner rather than later. With free agency approaching, Pittsburgh needs clarity on their quarterback situation so they can move forward with their roster-building efforts.
