Ex-Steelers QB Justin Fields Throws Wild Shade At Steelers Fans Compared To Jets Fans

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the topic of discussion in the NFL throughout the 2025 offseason. Several key players have left the team in favor of other opportunities, and the organization still does not have a surefire starting quarterback under contract for the 2025 season. This leaves a lot of questions up in the air heading into the upcoming NFL Draft, especially as the franchise continues to wait on an answer from Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh should already have their starting quarterback issues solved, but it failed to re-sign Justin Fields before free agency began.

Fields chose to sign with the New York Jets upon entering free agency, although many in the Pittsburgh fan base wanted the quarterback to remain in the Steel City. The young quarterback received a lucrative deal from New York as he signed a two-year deal worth $40 million with $30 million of that being guaranteed. The Steelers wanted to sign Fields, but the quarterback chose New York. He spoke in an interview with the Jets about signing with the team, and he was asked why he made his decision.

"I think number one, Coach [Aaron] Glenn," Fields said. "I played against him early in my career, I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play, so I think that was the biggest thing for me. Just the opportunity. The fans of course, the city. When you win here, there's no better place to win. All those reasons, all those characteristics, are ultimately the reason I ended up here."

The quarterback's answer is not a good look for Pittsburgh. The Jets have been one of the worst organizations in all of professional sports over the last decade, yet Fields chose them over the Steelers. He has some familiarity with new Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn as the two played against one another in the NFC North, which was another driving force for him to leave Pittsburgh.

Fields opting to play for a head coach in his first season in the role is a bit of an indictment on Mike Tomlin. Tomlin has been a head coach in the NFL for 18 seasons, and he is supposedly one of the most well-respected figures across the league. The fact that a potential starting quarterback left Pittsburgh to play for a rookie head coach doesn't deliver a ton of optimism about what is going on behind the scenes in Western Pennsylvania.

The quarterback may have some bad feelings about Pittsburgh after being replaced by Russell Wilson after six weeks during the 2024 season. The two were in a position battle during training camp, but it became clear Tomlin already had his mind made up that Wilson would be the team's starting quarterback. The only reason Fields had any chance to start was because of Wilson's calf injury.

This is not the first time that a former player has come out and gave some inkling that things in Pittsburgh aren't so great. Former running back Najee Harris wasted no time in trashing the organization about his arrival in Los Angeles.

Steelers Fans Take Shot From Justin Fields

Fields may have had his issues with the coaching staff in Pittsburgh after the way he was treated, but one group that always loved the quarterback was the fans. Before Wilson got into a groove during his Week 7 return against the Jets, the fans at Acrisure Stadium were booing the veteran while cheering for Fields to be put into the game. A seemingly overwhelming majority of the fan base wanted Fields to be the starter in 2025, but Tomlin and the organization ruined that chance.

The quarterback will get his chance for revenge against Pittsburgh in 2025, as he is the unquestioned starter in New York and the Jets will be hosting the Steelers during the regular season.
