Steelers Must Feel Threatened As Multiple Teams Will Be Looking To Jump Pittsburgh In 2025 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a big question mark in the NFL when it comes to the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. There are multiple positions that the team could address, and it isn't really clear which position is considered the highest priority. The franchise doesn't have a reliable starting quarterback under contract for the 2025 season, which could lead to the team selecting a top signal-caller early, while there should be some quality talent at defensive tackle available when the Steelers are on the clock with the 21st overall pick.

One of the big dominos hiding what Pittsburgh might do in the first round of the draft is veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers have an offer extended to the quarterback, but he is still deciding what he wants to do with his future. If he signs prior to the draft, the chances of the Steelers selecting a quarterback early get lower than they already are. If he decides to go elsewhere or is still holding the franchise up, a quarterback is in play.

The top two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft are Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. Both players should be off the board within the first three picks, which means either the Cleveland Browns or New York Giants will be without a quarterback. Jaxson Dart will still be on the board, and draft expert Todd McShay believes the Steelers will be one of the teams competing for him.

"I think Jaxson Dart could be a top 10 pick," McShay said. "If he’s not, you know we talk about 21 to Pittsburgh. Or a team, that’s the other thing, the Browns or the Giants are very likely to take Shedeur, whichever team doesn’t, the Browns are picking at 33, Giants one spot after. I think you’ll see one of those teams, whichever doesn’t get a quarterback, moving into the first round. Maybe it’s pick 19 to Tampa or 20 Denver."

Either the Browns or Giants will still be needing a quarterback during the second half of the first round, and the biggest threat to them is going to be Pittsburgh with the 21st overall selection. McShay suggests that either Cleveland or New York will be looking to swap with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Denver Broncos, who are the two teams selecting before Pittsburgh.

This would all be for Dart, who it has been hard to get a consensus read on during the pre-draft process. Some scouts believe he should not be a Round 1 pick, while others think he could wind up going in the top 10.

There is a chance that Pittsburgh doesn't want to go the route of drafting a quarterback in the first round, which would mean New York or Cleveland could just wait until their next pick in the early parts of the second round. This probably isn't an option, as whoever is drafting him is going to want the extra year of control that comes with the fifth-year option, which is only available to first round selections.

Steelers' Biggest Threat In The Quarterback Market Is The Giants

The Giants are the other team involved in the race for Rodgers, and they are the team that is most likely to jump in front of Pittsburgh on draft night. The Browns hold the second overall pick, so Sanders will be there if the organization wants him. This will leave the Giants with a tough decision, and if they don't reach for Dart, the franchise will be looking to move back up into the first round.

The reason the Giants going after a quarterback should be considered a sure-thing is because nearly everyone in that building is coaching for their job in 2025. General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll need to prove there is some sort of future with their regime, and that can only be done by finding the future of the position in New York.
