This player's preference to stay with the Steelers persisted until the very moment he ultimately signed a contract with another team. This indicates that the player had a strong desire to remain with the Steelers, and that the organization's culture had a positive impact. Gerry Dulac, a Steelers insider and writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, revealed via a post on X that the player in question was quarterback Russell Wilson.

However, those discussions ultimately proved incorrect, as Wilson instead signed with the New York Giants. Meanwhile, the Steelers' quarterback situation remains unresolved, with the organization still awaiting Rodgers' final choice.
Wilson's brief time with the Steelers involved a one-year contract for $1.2 million, with the Denver Broncos, his former team, covering a substantial portion of his salary. His insertion into the Steelers' starting lineup generated a range of reactions from fans and analysts. Following recovery from a calf injury by Week 7 in 2024, his return to the field resulted in Justin Fields being moved to the bench, despite Fields having steered the team to a promising 4-2 start. Across his 11 starts, Wilson accumulated 2,482 passing yards, threw 16 touchdowns, and recorded 5 interceptions. Rodgers' recent visit to the Steelers' facilities on Friday fueled speculation of an imminent deal, though no official agreement has happened.
