New Details Reveal Steelers' Reported Interest In Alabama's Jalen Milroe May Be Inflated

The Pittsburgh Steelers won't be anywhere near a Super Bowl appearance until they find their next franchise quarterback. Regardless of if Aaron Rodgers signs with the Steelers for a season or two, Pittsburgh is going to have to draft another quarterback in the near future. Many NFL Draft experts are sold on the fact that the 2026 draft class will have much more talent at the position, but the Steelers have expressed interest in drafting one this year anyway. One of the few quarterbacks that the Steelers have met with is Alabama Crimson Tide product, Jalen Milroe

Pittsburgh, who holds the 21st overall choice in the first-round of the 2025 NFL Draft, has huge decisions to make. The Steelers are in desperate need of help at defensive tackle, which many Pittsburgh insiders believe is the position they will most likely target at number 21. However, there is a scenario where the Steelers don't reach on a contract agreement with Rodgers, which would then skyrocket the likelihood of them taking a quarterback in the first-round. For this reason, it's critical that Rodgers makes his final decision before draft day.

Along with Milroe, the top quarterback prospects that the Steelers have either met with or shown interest in include Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Tyler Shough. Will Howard and Kyle McCord also have Pittsburgh's eye, but they don't scream "franchise quarterback." Lots of connections have been made between the Steelers and Milroe, and many analysts believe the Steelers love what he brings. A report was revealed that the Steelers met with Milroe for dinner recently. However, it was not reported that Milroe wasn't the only Alabama player present, which changes the perspective a little bit. NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah isn't fully sold on the Steelers selecting Milroe after his recent comments

"Can I put a little water on that?" Jeremiah asked after hearing the Steelers could take Milroe with either their first or third-round pick. "Can I put a little water on that fire? So, I talk to people throughout this process, a lot of people are in town during Pro Days and at different times of the year, and I talked to somebody who happened to be in the restaurant when the Pittsburgh Steelers were having dinner -- as it was reported with Jalen Milroe. Only, the little tidbit that seemed to be left out was there was like six other Alabama players there with them eating dinner. So, that's kind of draft season in a nutshell right there."

This report from Jeremiah says something about the Steelers and their thoughts on Milroe. If they had true, serious interest in selecting him and taking a chance on him becoming the next franchise quarterback, they likely would have done it alone or one on one. Considering that multiple former Alabama players were present during the meeting with Milroe, the Steelers may have just been doing their due diligence.

Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 NFL Draft prospect and former Alabama quarterback, Jalen Milroe celebrates after a big time score in 2024.

At Milroe's Pro Day, he spoke about his meeting with Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. Milroe told reporters that he would take full advantage of the opportunity if the Steelers selected him in this year's draft. Milroe gave his appreciation towards the AFC North, one of the toughest divisions in all professional sports.

Steelers Seem To Have No Set Plan At Quarterback For 2025 And Beyond

Tomlin and the front office don't seem to have a great handling of the concerning quarterback situation. The franchise continues to wait for Rodgers and his decision for 2025, but even he, a 41-year-old quarterback won't be a solution for very long. The Steelers need to find someone young with great abilities, but there isn't much of that in this year's draft according to many pundits. The best route to take would be a 2025 year with either Rodgers or Mason Rudolph running the show, and take a much better quarterback prospect early in the 2026 draft.
