Steelers' Reported "Terrible Meeting" With Shedeur Sanders Quickly Shut Down

The Pittsburgh Steelers have become one of the top organizations in the National Football League to gain traction on selecting star quarterback from Colorado, Shedeur Sanders. After Aaron Rodgers' first national appearance this week since free agency began, the vibe surrounding himself and the Steelers indicate that they won't be receiving his final decision for 2025 before the upcoming NFL Draft. As the Steelers are still in a deep search for their next franchise quarterback, a report was released that Sanders' recent meeting with the Steelers did not go well.

Sanders traveled to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers somewhat unexpectedly ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Outside of the teams with the first three overall picks, the likely only remaining team ahead of the Steelers in the draft that could look to take a quarterback are the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans currently claims the ninth overall choice, while the Steelers sit all the way at 21st. If all three teams between the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants decide to pass on Sanders, then a pairing between he and the Steelers is very possible. 

Recently as mentioned, a Steelers reporter claimed that the meeting between the two parties did not go too well. On Friday, Gerry Dulac, one of the top insiders in Pittsburgh, appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and debunked this report. 

"I will tell you, Rich, that they have a first-round grade on Jaxson Dart," Dulac told Eisen about the top quarterback prospects. "And they really like Shedeur Sanders, despite whatever post was put out there that he had a terrible meeting and it did not go well. Nothing could be further than the truth. They like the guy. They had a great meeting with him. They think, obviously, he's ultra-athletic, as we all know."

While Dulac's information on the Steelers' meeting with Sanders could be a good sign, the experienced reporter followed his response by sharing his belief that the Steelers, still, won't be drafting him. Dulac is a firm believer that the organization's top priority in the first round is bolstering the defensive line. Pittsburgh has two big concerning holes at quarterback and defensive line, and they'll have to decide which they want to address in the first round.

Despite the report that claimed the meeting in Pittsburgh with Sanders did not go well, shortly after the visit, Sanders said the visit was a 10 out of 10. Sanders seemed fond of Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin and even made comparisons to his father. 

Sanders' most likely two landing spots in the 2025 NFL Draft seem to be the Steelers and Saints. Opposing Dulac's belief in what Pittsburgh does on draft night, if the Steelers truly love Sanders, they could make an unlikely, but bold move to trade up to secure him. 

Steelers Insider Sold On Franchise Taking Quarterback In 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 quarterback draft class is expected to be significantly better than this year's group. For that reason, Dulac fully believes that the Black and Gold will wait for their opportunity on a franchise quarterback in next season's draft, as opposed to this year's. Only about three quarterbacks are hands down expected to become a starter in the NFL in 2025. The rest of the quarterbacks entering the draft will have to prove themselves as capable starters. If the Steelers go in a different direction other than quarterback in the first round, that signals they will take a big swing in 2026 and Rodgers could still be in play down line as well.
