Steelers Targeting Aaron Rodgers' Former Green Bay Packers Teammate Now Likely

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently made a big move by trading wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, a decision that has sparked a lot of talk among fans and analysts. Although Pickens wasn’t the only player at the position, his departure leaves a noticeable gap in the team’s wide receiver corps. In light of this, reports have surfaced suggesting that the Steelers are not finished reshaping their WR room. This means that the organization may be exploring other options, whether through another trade or by targeting a veteran free agent, to add depth and talent of their offensive unit ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

There are several talented free agent wide receivers the Steelers could consider adding to strengthen their roster. However, one intriguing option stands out, even though he isn't a free agent. This particular player should be a top target for the Steelers due to his existing connection with a potential incoming star. It’s no secret that the Steelers are currently viewed as a favorite to sign veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers

While Rodgers has yet to make an official decision, despite reportedly receiving a contract offer, the Steelers appear to be in a waiting game as they await his response. Adding a receiver who already has established chemistry with Rodgers could be the missing piece that not only enhances the offense, but also potentially influences Rodgers to finalize his commitment to Pittsburgh.

One player the Steelers should strongly consider targeting is Romeo Doubs, the current wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers and a former teammate of Rodgers. Doubs, who developed a solid connection with Rodgers during their time together in Green Bay, could be an ideal addition to the Steelers' receiving corps, especially if Rodgers ultimately decides to join the team. His familiarity with Rodgers’ playing style, timing, and preferences could provide a seamless transition in the passing game and help jumpstart the offense.

A few weeks ago, Rodgers appeared on The Pat McAfee Show, where many expected him to announce his decision regarding his future. Instead, Rodgers remained noncommittal, revealing that he was dealing with personal matters and offering little clarity about his plans moving forward. Recently, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette addressed the situation in a post on X, confirming that the trade of Pickens has no effect on Rodgers’ decision.

Although Dulac stated that the Pickens trade does not influence Rodgers’ decision, adding one of his former teammates could still make the situation more appealing for the veteran quarterback. The Steelers have already had a highly active offseason, with significant roster changes, both in terms of key acquisitions and notable departures.

During the 2025 NFL Draft, Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith emphasized the team’s commitment to building a more explosive and dynamic offense. Doubs, with his versatile skill set and big-play potential, could be a strong fit within that vision. His addition wouldn’t just serve as a comfort factor for Rodgers, but also align well with the offensive scheme the Steelers are aiming to implement.

The Steelers Are Loading Up For Future Drafts

The Steelers had what many consider to be a successful 2025 NFL Draft, getting praise from both fans and analysts for their selections and focus on key areas of need. The front office demonstrated a clear vision for the future, making picks that not only strengthen the current roster, but also build it for seasons to come. As the dust settles on this year’s draft, attention is already shifting toward next year, especially since the 2026 NFL Draft is set to take place in Pittsburgh, bringing even more excitement and anticipation.

With several recent trades already securing additional draft assets, along with the potential for compensatory picks, the Steelers could find themselves in a strong position to make impactful moves in their own hometown. The 2026 draft represents not just another opportunity to improve the roster, right in their own backyard.
