The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced one of the most talked-about offseasons in recent memory, with a combination of notable acquisitions, as well as the departure of several key players. The Steelers have worked to improve the roster in an effort to remain competitive, drawing attention from across the league. However, beyond the moves already made, there are important players currently on the roster whose contracts are nearing their expiration. As a result, the organization is now entering a critical phase of contract negotiations, working to secure deals for some key players.

One of the most important players facing contract considerations is TJ Watt, the standout linebacker who has been a cornerstone of the Steelers' defense for years. Not only is Watt one of the most dominant pass rushers in the league, but he’s also widely regarded as a fan favorite and a leader both on and off the field.

Recently, Steelers insider Mike DeFabo of The Athletic published an article discussing the team’s busy offseason. In this article, DeFabo addressed questions and concerns surrounding Watt’s contract negotiation process. He offered insight into where discussions currently stand and even outlined a possible timeline for when a new deal could realistically be finalized, providing fans with some clarity as they await news on one of the team’s most valuable players.

"My gut says the Steelers sign Watt to an extension after the last preseason game and before the regular season kicks off, based on how [Omar] Khan handled Pat Freiermuth and Cameron Heyward last year," DeFabo wrote.

In the 2024 offseason, the Steelers secured long-term commitments from two of their key players, tight end Pat Freiermuth and defensive lineman Cameron Heyward, by signing them to contract extensions. Freiermuth agreed to a four-year, $48.4 million extension on September 6, 2024, which included $11.6 million fully guaranteed at signing and a $10.5 million signing bonus. This deal underscored the team's confidence in Freiermuth's abilities and his role in the Steelers' offensive scheme.

Heyward, a veteran leader on the defense, signed a three-year, $45 million extension on September 3, 2024. The contract featured $16 million fully guaranteed and included a $14.7 million signing bonus.  Heyward's extension not only rewarded his consistent performance, but also provided the team with salary cap flexibility by reducing his 2024 cap number by $9.8 million.

While the Steelers currently have the financial capability to offer Watt a large contract extension, the organization must strategically consider its financial commitments and long-term priorities. One major expense already on the books is the five-year, $150 million contract given to veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf, one of the key offseason acquisitions this year. Also, the team is pursuing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose potential deal would likely involve a significant salary, adding further pressure to their cap space. With these major financial undertakings, both finalized and still underway, the Steelers must carefully examine their salary structure to make sure they can manage another large contract for Watt while still keeping a sense of competitiveness of the roster.

The Steelers Would Most Likely Have To Pay Watt A Ton

The recent contract extension signed by Cleveland Browns star edge rusher Myles Garrett has become a key factor potentially influencing the delayed negotiations with Watt. Garrett’s new deal made him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, raising the salary benchmark by an impressive $5 million per year. Given that Watt and Garrett have often been compared throughout their careers, it's reasonable to assume that Watt would seek a contract in a similar range to Garrett's recent deal.

The NFL’s salary cap has increased over the years, a trend that directly impacts the contract expectations of the league’s top-tier players. Although this growth gives teams greater financial flexibility, it doesn’t guarantee that everyone agrees with the rising costs associated with securing elite talent.
