The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to be one of the more intriguing franchises in the National Football League. The quarterback situation has generated plenty of discussion as the organization waits on a decision from future Hall of Famer, Aaron Rodgers. The team will need to get excellent play from whoever is under center come the 2025 regular season, and as it stands with Memorial Day around the corner, Mason Rudolph is atop the depth chart. The former third-round pick had a great run as the starter at the end of the 2023 campaign, even though he began that season as the third option.

Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph (#2) runs a drill and gets ready to throw a football during a 2022 team training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

While the overall expectation around the league and fan base is that Rodgers will end up playing for the Steelers, that has yet to be confirmed. That means that Rudolph is currently preparing to be the team's starting quarterback. There is plenty of time for that to change, but he might be given a legitimate shot for a full 17 games if the veteran in Rodgers decides to retire, or wait for another opportunity.

Rudolph spoke to Mark Kaboly, who is a team correspondent for The Pat McAfee Show, and dropped a subtle hint that he actually may know what is going on with the position. It appears as if he has had private conversations with General Manager Omar Khan, and Rudolph might already be preparing to backup Rodgers.

“I assumed they were going to sign people and add to the roster because they always go to training camp with four quarterbacks,” Rudolph said to Kaboly. “I knew that going in. I am going to respect the privacy of what Omar [Khan] told me specifically. That’s for him to decide when, or whatever, they add a fourth.”

It's pretty clear that Rudolph had conversations with Khan about the state of the Steelers' quarterback room, and his decision to keep those private is very telling. One can assume that Rudolph knows exactly what is going to happen, unless whatever the feeling is inside Pittsburgh's building ends up drastically changing in the coming weeks. Overall, it's quite evident that the current individual at the top of the depth chart knows whether or not that is going to change.

There are worse backups in the league compared to Rudolph. Analysts will argue that the Steelers have one of the worst quarterback rooms in the entire NFL, but if Rodgers does end up signing, the duo will at least be recognized as formidable. The drama has dragged on regarding Rodgers, but small hints like the one from Rudolph suggest that the team must know a little bit more than the public does.

It still remains imperative for Rodgers to make a decision soon. The entire offense needs to get on the same page as the regular season inches closer. Rudolph and Rodgers have different styles of play, and there's no guarantee that they command a huddle in similar ways. It is going to be interesting to see how the dynamic of the room changes if and when Rodgers puts pen to paper.

Rudolph was very clear when speaking to Kaboly that he does indeed expect a fourth quarterback to be added to the roster. Many expect that to be Rodgers, and the fact that Khan already spoke to Rudolph about the situation means that the front office is confident about whichever outcome may end up coming to the surface in the coming weeks.

Steelers Will Be Playing Catch-Up If Rodgers Signs

Pittsburgh has a questionable offense as it is, but the uncertainty in the quarterback room is adding more stress to the fan base's worries about the unit. It will be more clear soon, but no one is currently holding their breath. Rudolph will serve as a fine backup, but he has never proven that he can be a legitimate, 17-game starter at the professional level. It appears, however, that he already knows what is going to happen.
