It has been widely known that the Pittsburgh Steelers could be interested in adding wide receiver help with the 2025 NFL trade deadline right around the corner. Fans want the organization to make a big splash, but it may not be entirely necessary because of how the offensive unit has played. The defense seems to be more of an issue right now, which is why it was somewhat understood when the franchise was reportedly making a very low-key, but intriguing signing at the wideout spot. Marquez Valdes-Scantling was expected to sign to play in the Steel City as recent as Monday evening.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) points in the direction of one of his teammates as the group practices during a 2025 training camp work out at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
This acquisition would lead to Aaron Rodgers being reunited with a former target of his, but that may now be in the rearview mirror before it even came to fruition. Pittsburgh's own Gerry Dulac is shutting down the notion that the deal is occurring.
FYI Don't look for any WR signings by the Steelers this week.

Jordan Schultz previously reported that Valdes-Scantling to the Steelers was very much happening. Apparently, Dulac has other intel that is suggesting otherwise. His co-worker, Ray Fittipaldo, agreed.
Doesn't sound like Valdez-Scantling is signing with the Steelers this week.

This is a very quick change of pace, but it's evident that something happened with General Manager Omar Khan and the free agent in Valdes-Scantling. This doesn't mean a contract isn't being signed; however, it's not expected to happen ahead of a Week 9 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

This does bring up an interesting possible scenario. The Steelers could have decided to rescind any kind of offer that was on the table because a trade is close to being agreed upon with another organization. Another potential reasoning is that Scotty Miller's injured finger may not be as big of an issue as previously thought. Either way, something is leading Pittsburgh to stand down from its efforts to sign Valdes-Scantling.
Tomlin said Scotty Miller could return to practice. Daniel Ekuale is out and DeShon Elliott is out with his hyperextended knee. Isaac Seumalo is questionable with his pec injury.

Miller is a veteran that has played a simple, but important role in the Steelers' locker room. While bringing in a former Rodgers target could be beneficial, it may not be worth it if that individual was expected to be released upon Miller's return. Additionally, if Pittsburgh is actively seeking a trade for a pass-catcher and Khan is closing in on an agreement, Valdes-Scantling's presence wouldn't make much sense.

Steelers Still Could Be Hunting Some Receiver Help
With the alleged signing of Valdes-Scantling now being considered false my a reputable local insider, the franchise in the Steel City may absolutely remain interested in making a trade. No one will know how big of a splash the front office would be willing to make until it happens, but the Steelers are certainly a trade deadline team to watch moving forward.
