The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most well run organizations in sports, and other franchises around the league look to Pittsburgh as a good example of how to operate. This makes some of the people in Pittsburgh's front office a hot commodity as other franchises look to take a step forward. Currently, the Steelers are run by General Manager Omar Khan, Team President and Owner Art Rooney II, and Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl. Khan and Rooney are here to stay, while Weidl is a name to watch as he could be poached by another franchise from around the league.

Weidl doesn't get as much credit as he is not well known to the casual fan, but he has a ton of respect around the league. He is an executive with a strong scouting background, and is a big reason the Philadelphia Eagles have the roster they have today as he spent significant time with the organization before coming to Pittsburgh. He also helped the Baltimore Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII. He has interviewed for some teams to become their next general manager, but now a new opportunity has opened up.

The Minnesota Vikings moved on from General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah on Friday, and the timing is certainly off. The executive had been at the Senior Bowl all week scouting for the upcoming NFL Draft, and he had just signed an extension during the 2025 offseason. He is now fired and the Vikings must look for a new general manager, which is something the organization will be doing after the NFL Draft. Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski will run things for now.

Weidl had already interviewed for the general manager job with the Atlanta Falcons, but that organization decided to go in another direction. It seemed like a certainty that the Steelers would be holding onto Weidl for the foreseeable future, but the Vikings could be interested in him once they begin their search. NFL insider Dianna Russini described what Minnesota might be looking for, and it sounds like Weidl is an exact match.
The search for a new GM will go down after the draft. Like most teams in this position, expect a pivot, likely the opposite of what they just had. Iโd expect an older school type with a strong scouting background, someone rooted in traditional evaluation and personnel building.

Weidl checks all of these boxes. His background is in scouting, and he seems to be a perfect fit. He will likely at the very least be given the chance to interview for the job, and he might land it. He has been one of the top general manager candidates in the league over the years, and it is a bit stunning he hasn't gotten a gig yet.
The silver lining of this entire situation is that the Vikings are focusing on preparing for the draft now, which will delay the organization's search for its next general manager. That means Pittsburgh will at least be holding onto Weidl through the 2026 NFL Draft.

Steelers Could Make Organizational Move To Retain Andy Weidl
If Pittsburgh values Weidl as much as it should, there is a way to retain him. A good move might be Rooney II stepping out of his role as team president, and Khan being given the title. This will open up a spot for Weidl as general manager. This would go against the way that Pittsburgh has operated in the past as the owner has always been the team president, but it is not a bad idea if the franchise wants to keep Weidl in town.
