The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the more interesting teams in the NFL over the last few years, and a lot of that has had to do with the constant uncertainty at the quarterback position. There was an entire saga throughout the 2025 season regarding whether or not Aaron Rodgers would sign with the franchise, and he eventually wound up doing so at the start of June. Pittsburgh is in a very similar spot in 2026 as the quarterback is scheduled to become a free agent while he makes a decision on whether or not he would like to continue his playing career.

Rodgers played well for the Steelers during the 2025 season, and he helped lead the team to its third consecutive postseason appearance. He also was a big reason the organization was able to win the AFC North for the first time since the 2020 season, as the franchise hosted its first playoff game in front of fans since the 2017 season. The organization has made it clear that it would welcome Rodgers back to Pittsburgh in 2026, but it is still unclear if he wants to.

The four-time league MVP joined The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, and he spoke about his time in Pittsburgh during the 2025 season while not really touching on his future. His former teammate, AJ Hawk, rejoined the show after some technical problems, where he asked Rodgers whether it was Pittsburgh or bust in 2026.

Hawk was almost certainly joking when asking the question as Rodgers had made it clear throughout the interview that he was not going to be making some life-altering decision or statement while on the air. The quarterback joked with the rest of the crew on the show while dodging the question.

"Lets mute him again," Rodgers said.

Many fans in Pittsburgh have assumed that if the quarterback wanted to continue his playing career, it would only be in Pittsburgh. However, he is scheduled to become a free agent, meaning he can sign wherever he would want to. There are plenty of quarterback-needy teams around the league that would welcome in Rodgers.

There have been plenty of reports circulating throughout the 2026 offseason. Many have stated that the quarterback is leaning towards playing again, but the validity of those reports cannot be confirmed as Rodgers is known for keeping his circle tight. Unless it comes from the quarterback himself, it is hard to believe anything that is written or said about him.

The way he reacted to the question was interesting. The veteran had interest in playing for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2025 offseason, but that franchise opted to roll with JJ McCarthy instead. Things didn't go well for Minnesota in 2025, and it is fair to assume that the organization might have some sort of interest in bringing Rodgers in to mentor McCarthy while the young quarterback backed him up.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Teases Free Agency

As of now, Rodgers is going to hit the open market once free agency begins in the second week of March. The Steelers should be considered the leaders to sign the quarterback if he wants to keep playing, but it sounds like the quarterback has not heard too much from the Steelers.

Rodgers would be attracted to the new coaching staff and reuniting with his former head coach Mike McCarthy, but as he mentioned earlier in his interview, he has not been given a timeline from the organization nor as he seen a contract offer.
