Steelers Big Addition Of Jamel Dean Gives Clarity To Defensive Plans

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded to acquire Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey ahead of the 2025 season. Smith, however, was a colossal failure in his lone season in Pittsburgh, and his time in the Steel City came to an abrupt end shortly after the season concluded. Ramsey, on the other hand, immediately made his presence and leadership felt. He elevated the team’s overall leadership and proved versatile, contributing as a solid piece wherever the coaching staff needed him (whether at cornerback, in the slot, or even stepping in at safety).

On Monday, as the legal tampering period began, the Steelers made several significant moves to reshape their roster. One of the biggest came later in the day when the team agreed to terms with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean on a three-year, $36.75 million contract. The signing adds another high-profile defensive back to Pittsburgh and immediately impacts the team’s secondary strategy.

Steelers insider Brian Batko quickly highlighted how Dean’s arrival will affect Ramsey’s role moving forward. With Dean now in Pittsburgh, Ramsey’s responsibilities are expected to shift even further, giving him opportunities to focus on his strengths in leadership and versatility while allowing the team to maximize its defensive schemes. Fans and analysts alike are now eager to see how this new defensive alignment will translate on the field in the 2026 season.

"So their outside options now are Joey Porter Jr., Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr., Brandin Echols and, I suppose, Jalen Ramsey," Batko said while breaking down the Dean signing. "But you'd have to think this further signals Ramsey to slot/safety full-time, maybe Echols to the slot full-time."

This analysis underscores the strategic shift Pittsburgh appears to be making. By moving Ramsey into a more central role, the Steelers can leverage his leadership and versatility while keeping Dean and other young cornerbacks such as Joey Porter Jr. in positions where they can thrive. The move also suggests that the Steelers are committed to strengthening their pass defense, which was inconsistent in previous seasons. Fans and analysts alike are now eager to see how this new defensive alignment will translate on the field in the coming season.

In addition to positional adjustments, these moves could have a ripple effect on Pittsburgh’s defensive culture. Ramsey’s leadership has already been a stabilizing force in the locker room, and with Dean joining, the team now has multiple voices capable of mentoring younger players. For a team that has often struggled to consistently slow down opposing passing attacks, this influx of experienced talent could be transformative.

How the Steelers integrate these players and balance playing time will be critical to whether the defense can reach its full potential in 2026. As the team enters offseason workouts and training camp, the pressure will be on new head coach Mike McCarthy and the coaching staff to optimize matchups and get the most out of their newly restructured secondary.

Steelers' Secondary Starting To Look Daunting For The 2026 Season

The Steelers are likely to move Brandin Echols to the slot full-time, which would allow Ramsey to transition to a safety role permanently, according to Batko. This shift would maximize Ramsey’s versatility and leadership while giving the team more flexibility in coverage schemes.

With Ramsey moving to safety, the question becomes who will line up opposite Porter. The most likely candidate is Asante Samuel Jr., who has shown the ability to handle outside coverage and complement the team’s revamped secondary. The Steelers got a deal done to keep Samuel in the Steel City for the 2026 season on Monday morning. The Steelers also are not expected to be done making moves.
