The Pittsburgh Steelers have been searching for a solid wide receiver to pair with their star, DK Metcalf. They felt the impact of not having another big-time weapon last year, as their passing game left a lot to be desired. The organization added the likes of Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in 2025, who proved to be largely ineffective. The Steelers have finally made the splash move to improve their receiving core during the 2026 offseason.

Newly acquired Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. walking off the field after an NFL game with the Indianapolis Colts in December of 2023.

Pittman was a salary dump for the Indianapolis Colts, as the Steelers only gave up a sixth-round pick to acquire him. Pittsburgh received a seventh-round pick, along with Pittman and then signed him to a three-year, $59 million extension. Pittman had a $29 million cap hit in 2026. He had spent his six-year NFL career all in Indy, where he played 95 games. Pittman caught 485 passes for 5,254 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Pittman's a big-bodied receiver who thrives in the short and intermediate game. He could take attention away from Metcalf as he was double teamed on a majority of snaps last season. Pittman is known as a great blocker and can make tough, aggressive catches. He is seemingly very excited to be a part of the Steelers organization based on his recent posts on X

Steelers star defender Cam Heyward had a very positive reaction to the Pittman trade, as well as some insight about his role on the offense. Heyward spoke about it on his podcast, Not Just Football.

"I think [Metcalf and Pittman] have big bodies, and to put them together on the field, you've got two guys who have a lot of attention on them. I look at this, and this opens up Pat Freiermuth a little bit more. This opens up Darnell [Washington], and so DK shouldn't have to experience more double teams and mismatches start to happen all over the place," Heyward said.

Heyward is seemingly happy to welcome Pittman to the team. He mentioned how it really opens up opportunities for the tight ends to shine. The Steelers had issues, at times, getting their tight ends involved last year. This trade should prove to pay dividends for this offense.

Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth warms up before Pittsburgh's 13-6 loss against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17 of the 2025 NFL regular season.

Freiermuth had one of the worst seasons of his career under former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's offense, which was supposed to heavily involve tight ends. The tight end put up 41 catches for 486 yards and four touchdowns. A down year from his 2024 campaign, where he has 653 yards and seven touchdowns. Pittman can take the pressure off the tight end group, as he is known for his short and intermediate routes as mentioned. Freiermuth is known for his ability to utilize the middle of the field. This move could allow him to find his niche again and improve his season numbers from 2025.

Washington is another tight end who was underutilized last year. He will benefit greatly from increased touches, as he is a monstrous runner after the catch. The Pittman trade opens up the offense for all of Pittsburgh's weapons to prosper.

The Steelers Are Not Done At Receiver

The Steelers have been speculated to draft a receiver this whole offseason. Some names that have popped up are the likes of Makai Lemon and Jordyn Tyson at pick 21. The Steelers would greatly benefit from adding a young receiver to their core, even with the addition of Pittman.

Pittsburgh has been speculated to target several free agents that are currently still available in free agency too. Nonetheless, the Steelers should make a move towards depth and youth to ensure their offense has plenty of weapons for whoever ends up under center. The Black and Gold could have a powerhouse offense if they decide to draft a high-end wide receiver.
