The Pittsburgh Steelers still have a lot of things they need to figure out this offseason; mainly the status of the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers is still deciding on whether or not he wants to continue his playing career, while drafting a quarterback at some point in the 2026 NFL Draft seems to be a possibility. Regardless, the most likely outcome at the quarterback position seems to be Rodgers returning to Pittsburgh for the 2026 season. The organization has been making "win-now" moves throughout the offseason, and he would likely be the best option to lead the team with the goal of making a deep playoff run.

Rodgers played well for the Steelers in 2025, especially when considering his lack of weapons. He made some things happen, although his limited mobility was an obvious problem throughout the year. He deserved a better defense from his team, which is something that he should get if he were to come back in 2026. He will also have more to work with in the passing game as Pittsburgh acquired Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts to pair with DK Metcalf. Currently, Roman Wilson is the third wide receiver behind those two, and beat writer Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday to share why that might be an issue.

"To answer your question about Roman Wilson, yes, I still think they're going to try to develop him," Fittipaldo said. "He's a third-round pick. They're not going to give up on him. I think the new coaching staff likes him and they want to work with him. Obviously, there's a hurdle to get over there if Aaron Rodgers comes back as the quarterback. That did not work between those two last season, so they would have to work that out. So, right now, it's Metcalf, Pittman, and Roman Wilson, and I think they will still draft two receivers."

Wilson has had a bizarre career up until this point. He suffered some injuries during his rookie year in 2024, and that year essentially served as a redshirt season for him. He was healthy in 2025 and he was able to make some plays, but it was obvious that he was not a favorite target of Rodgers, which was probably a factor in him being a healthy scratch later in the year.

It became obvious that Rodgers was not the biggest fan of Wilson, and that was something that was reported several times after the season came to a close. Wilson is now entering his third year after being a third-round pick back in 2024, and bringing Rodgers back has the chance to seriously hinder the wideout's development. Another season of no progress from Wilson would likely mean he will never earn a second contract in Pittsburgh, which would be fairly disappointing considering the amount of excitement that surrounded the player when he was selected by the franchise.

This kind of tension between Rodgers and Wilson is why fans get frustrated with the organization wanting to bring back a 42-year-old quarterback. He might give the team the best shot to win a playoff game in 2026, but there is no world where it is a good move for the future of the organization.

Steelers Could Have More Wide Receivers Ruined By Aaron Rodgers

It is basically a guarantee that the Steelers will be drafting at least one wide receiver high in the 2026 NFL Draft, probably in the first round. The franchise is expected to double dip at the position, and that is a risky move if Rodgers ends up coming back. He has no patience with younger wide receivers, and a young guy could have his confidence ruined by spending just one season with a quarterback like that.
