Steelers' Behind The Scenes Secret May Have Just Been Exposed About Pittsburgh's QB Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a very similar spot to where the organization was during the 2025 season. The franchise finds itself waiting on quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the veteran is making the decision on whether or not he wants to continue his playing career. It does not seem like any other team would be a good spot for Rodgers to play this year, so the decision is likely between the Steelers and retirement. Rodgers has been taking his time with all this, even though he and the organization both said they would not drag things out this time around.

The fan base was hoping for a decision from the four-time league MVP before the start of free agency, but obviously that did not happen. However, it is important to note that just because the public does not know what he plans to do, that doesn't mean the franchise is also being kept in the dark. Pittsburgh has continued to make "win now" moves both in free agency and via trade, and the organization has built quite the team around Rodgers if he were to come back in 2026. Beat writer Christopher Carter hosted a mailbag for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Friday morning, and he was asked about the situation a few times.

"I think, like last time, there's an agreement in place and he'll be the starter," Carter wrote. "I do think there were some conversations between both sides about additions to the offense, but that it's just a matter of time he signs for another year."

Carter was asked about whether or not Pittsburgh's offseason moves, including selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, would play a role in whether or not Rodgers returns. He doesn't believe it was as big of a deal as fans might make it out to be, but Rodgers certainly wanted an improved arsenal of weapons on that side of the football. Adding Michael Pittman Jr. through a trade with the Indianapolis Colts was good way to begin that process.

Rodgers probably would not agree to come back to Pittsburgh if the team was not going to be aggressive when it came to adding talent during the 2026 offseason. The franchise has done well so far on both sides of the ball, and the organization has 12 selections in the NFL Draft at the end of April. Carter continued to double down on the fact that there is likely a secret agreement in place between the quarterback and the organization that will be revealed later on once Rodgers officially signs a contract for the 2026 season.

"Like last time, I'm pretty sure there's a behind the scenes agreement the public is not privy to and this will end with him signing a contract, and this not being an issue when the season comes around," Carter wrote.

It would be nice to know for sure if there was an agreement behind the scenes between the two sides, but Rodgers is a very private individual. He keeps his circle tight, and confidential information rarely ever leaks out about the quarterback. This "secret agreement" must have been agreed to after his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, as he gave strange answers about his future in Pittsburgh during that conversation.

Steelers Seem To Be In No Rush On A Decision From Aaron Rodgers

The Steelers are one of the teams in the league that have had a very inconsistent quarterback situation over the last several seasons. The franchise has had a different Week 1 starter in five consecutive seasons, and that streak could end in 2026 if Rodgers were to return. Carter's hypothesis that there is a secret agreement between the two sides has some legs based on the offseason moves made by the Steelers, and the fact that Pittsburgh showed little-to-no interest in the free agent quarterback market.
