The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a very busy offseason. General Manager Omar Khan has done a nice job so far filling in the team's biggest needs. He has brought in Michael Pittman Jr., Jamel Dean, and Rico Dowdle. Pittman fills a massive hole for the team that has lingered for at least two seasons now. Dean is a solid man-to-man cornerback who will be a nice complement to Joey Porter Jr., and Dowdle will fill the hole Kenneth Gainwell left behind. All of these players are big physical players who are not afraid to be the aggressor. Not only that, they are all high-character guys.

Pittman is similar to DK Metcalf in how he uses his physicality to get open. Metcalf has better big-play ability, but Pittman is arguably a more reliable target over the middle. Dowdle is a strong physical runner who fits what Head Coach Mike McCarthy wants to do. His skill set differs from what Gainwell offered and could be just as good, enough better than what fans saw in 2025. Dean is the stereotypical prototype of a Steelers cornerback who is more than willing to tackle. The franchise has struggled to find cornerbacks who are willing to do that, but Dean specializes in it. The Steelers have always built their team on physicality, and that's exactly what Khan added in the 2026 offseason.

Khan recently had a one-on-one interview with former Steelers offensive lineman Max Starks, during which he discussed the offseason moves. Khan says he's been around long enough to know when guys fit the Steeler mold, and he believes all three mentioned above were the ones for them.

"You know when you're around this as long as I've been around, you sort of know. You know, you were a great one, Khan explained. "You know we did our homework on these guys, we filled several need positions and you just sort of know and we feel good about these guys... You know they're Steelers."

Khan has been bringing in some high-character, but quality players to the team. Guys who won't cause trouble off the field and just be football players. Players like that are hard to come by, and he capitalized on the opportunity. The franchise has lacked players like this for a long time now at key positions. Now, they add three who are all major upgrades at their positions. Dean, in particular, is great for the team's culture. He's been on a Super Bowl-winning team and has seen what it looks like; he'll be a huge help to the secondary.

Khan has been doing this for a few seasons now. He sent away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for their third- and fifth-round selections. The team didn't trade Pickens because he wasn't good enough; they moved him because of his off-the-field antics. He was often late to games and would deliberately put in no effort. The Steelers have had quite a few wide receivers cause issues of late, all of whom they've moved on from. The franchise's recent draft picks also reflect this attempt at a culture change.

Steelers Have Been Drafting Football-First Guys

The franchise has selected many collegiate team captains in the past few drafts. Jack Sawyer was a captain on the National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes, Derrick Harmon was a captain for the Oregon Ducks, and Yahya Black was also a captain for Iowa. All of these players and the other players they've drafted over the last three seasons have been high-character players who just want to play football.

Since Khan took over, it appears his goal has been to restore the Steelers' culture to how it was during their dynasty days. Hard-nosed players who don't care about anything but winning. Fans are hoping this strategy pays off.
