The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft was an absolute rollercoaster for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not many in the media have talked about offensive lineman Max Iheanachor very much because the initial pick was supposed to be wide receiver Makai Lemon. Despite essentially being a second option, the selection of the big man up front suggested that the team is still worrying about the future of Broderick Jones. The left tackle's fifth-year option was recently declined, and the 2026 campaign could be his last in the Steel City, especially if he is unable to suit up and earn himself a new contract.

The Steelers have been focused on building in the trenches dating back to the 2023 offseason, and taking offensive linemen in three of the last four first rounds speaks to that approach. However, it has kept the team from going after playmakers. That was going to change with Lemon, but then the Philadelphia Eagles stepped in to prevent that from happening.
Iheanachor is viewed as a raw prospect that may need some time to develop. If he is thrown right into the fire, there could be some issues with consistency that might end up hurting the offense as a whole. If Jones can't play and Iheanachor isn't projecting as a starting left tackle, Pittsburgh could do a few things. One idea is to simply let Dylan Cook play until the rookie is ready; however, the Steelers could also go looking in the free-agent bargain bin.
There are not too many reliable veterans available post-NFL Draft, but one comes to mind that could provide stability. Making a move such as this would almost certainly tell the fan base that Jones is not expected to play in 2026, which is why the Steelers could be holding off. With that said, Taylor Decker has 140 career NFL starts, making him a capable lineman who could easily fill in right away.
It was reported that Jones suffered a setback to his neck injury recently, so Pittsburgh might wait a little longer to understand the prognosis if what Adam Schefter said is indeed true.

Decker would have to be looked at as an upgrade over Cook, and this kind of signing would give Iheanachor plenty of time to adjust to the NFL level. It makes sense to take a look at if Jones' recovery is still being viewed as a long road.

Decker has spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions, but he is moving on in 2026. Retirement was thought to be a possibility; however, there has not been announcement and speculation continues to run rampant about where he could end up playing. The Steelers bringing him in only makes sense if Jones is unlikely to play, so it's fair to wonder if Decker might be waiting to see what the status is in Pittsburgh.
Signing a veteran like Decker is not going to instantly make the Steelers a Super Bowl contender, but he gives the team options. He also would provide a presence that could be trusted, rather than someone with inexperience like Iheanachor or Cook protecting the quarterback's blindside.

Steelers Currently Have Very Uneasy Situation On Left Side Of The Line
Pittsburgh is all set from the center position and over to the right. At least, it appears to be that way as long as Troy Fautanu remains at right tackle. Overall, the left guard and tackle spots have plenty of questions. One of the biggest reasons for this is due to Jones' injury, and there should be some more information coming out as offseason activities ramp up. Decker is a perfect stopgap solution for the Steelers if Iheanachor isn't ready and Jones will be on the sideline.
