The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a history of hiring young, promising head coaches over the years. That was expected to happen once again in 2026 after Mike Tomlin stepped down following an incredible 19-year run. Instead, Team Owner Art Rooney II went with an experienced, offensive-minded individual in Mike McCarthy. This was rather shocking, but the new leader in the Steel City is from the town, so he understands how much the organization means to the fans. Now, the franchise is tasked with breaking a near-decade long run without a postseason victory.

There is going to be a lot of pressure on the new regime to win early and often. While the quarterback situation remains relatively unclear, there is still plenty of talent on the roster. In recent years, the Steelers' offensive and defensive units have not exactly complemented one another. It consistently has seemed as if one collective plays up to the occasion while the other has an off week.
There were plenty of attractive candidates on the market, but Pittsburgh went the surprising route of hiring McCarthy. Some may have believed that it was a feel-good move because of his ties to the city; however, he has won a Super Bowl and produced some prolific offenses over the years. The Black and Gold faithful could be in for a nice surprise once the regular season kicks off.
Team reporter Ray Fittipaldo hosted a fan chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday and had plenty to answer about the current state of the organization. Someone asked if both sides of the ball will look different due to a new head coach coming to town, and the beat writer noted something that was rather interesting. The franchise's owner has not been happy with the production on offense of late.
"Yes, and especially on offense," Fittipaldo wrote. "That's why he was hired. Art Rooney wants the offense to be more competitive."
It was easy connecting the dots about the Steelers desiring a better offense after Tomlin stepped down. That's why the McCarthy hire made sense, but to have a respected insider detail that as the exact reason for the move speaks volumes. Rooney seems to be sick and tired of watching incompetent offenses take the field, and now the expectation is for that trend to change.

The Steelers might not see success immediately. There is no way to know what the offense will look like until a starting quarterback is set in stone. Aaron Rodgers is continuing to take his time, making it hard to project what kind of potential the unit may have in 2026. Moving forward beyond McCarthy's first season, the focus will be on landing on a signal-caller of the future without any question marks.
Rooney is often behind the scenes and doesn't appear in front of the press much particularly in the middle of any given season. He has been available for interviews a couple of times since Tomlin stepped down and consistently made it clear that he would have expected an answer from Rodgers.
Now, the team is still waiting for the four-time MVP and Rooney could be a little worried that his main goal of boosting the offense might look bad in the first year with McCarthy if an inexperienced individual is under center.

Steelers Have Slowly Been Losing Trust Of The Fan Base
Several decisions over the last decade or so have upset a very loyal group of fans all across the world. It's now clear that Rooney could have sensed the frustration with an inconsistent offense; hence, the decision was made to hire one of the league's most experienced offensive minds. The goal, though, isn't just to put up more points. The collective effort of all 53 men on the roster will be important if winning playoff games is near. McCarthy will be the one in charge of all of that.
