Steelers' "Best" Deal Of 2026 Offseason Should Unlock An Elite Secondary

The Pittsburgh Steelers were very active early on during the 2026 free agent frenzy, picking up numerous veterans to provide depth and stability at multiple positions. Pittsburgh went for guys who are around the primes of their respective careers, like Michael Pittman Jr. and Jaquan Brisker. This strategy should hopefully lead to more success in the future, especially when they know who the eventual franchise quarterback will be.

There appears to be one signing that stands out above the rest for the Steelers. ESPN's Bill Barnwell explained which decision was the best one that Pittsburgh made during the 2026 offseason.

"Best: Signing Jamel Dean to a three-year contract," Barnwell said. "The Steelers are only really on the hook for one year and $13.5 million, leaving them with plenty of flexibility if Dean does take a step back in his age-30 season. Between their devastating trio of pass rushers on the edge and the combination of Dean and Joey Porter Jr. on the outside, new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham should have everything he needs to shut down opposing passing games in 2026."

Jamel Dean has had his share of injury concerns, but when he is on the field, he can be an absolute game-wrecker. In 2025 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he posted a sub-50% completion percentage against him to go with nine passes defended. He is also a very sound tackler, as he missed a career-low one tackle throughout that entire campaign. If there was one thing Pittsburgh needed from the secondary, it was better tackling. Dean should be able to provide more of that this upcoming season.

Dean will turn 30 years old in October, and cornerbacks can suffer a very hard decline when they get around that age and beyond. However, the Steelers have a cap wizard at general manager, and Omar Khan figured out a way to make this three-year-deal worth it for both sides. As usual, it is a very backloaded deal with the focus on the signing bonus without giving out fully guaranteed money after Year 1.

As long as Dean plays well in 2026, he will be locked in for 2027 with a $4 million roster bonus to go along with his signing bonus proration. 2028 gets a little trickier, as releasing him would free up $11.25 million in cap space. Of course, as long as he continues to play well, the Steelers will find a way to keep him around. There are a couple outs in the deal if he regresses, but a real chance to see the entire deal out if he continues to do well.

Steelers Are A Perfect Scheme Fit For Dean

On defense, the Steelers want to be a very physical team, and that is especially the case at cornerback. They have Joey Porter Jr. as the CB1 with how he has only allowed one touchdown in his entire career. His job will be to lock down every team's top wideout. Dean does well in that role as well, and he won't even be expected to stick with the elite of the elite at wide receiver one-on-one. He will be given the "easier" tasks each week.

Just like Barnwell said: this defense should completely shut down opposing offenses with the sheer amount of talent on the team. The two starting cornerbacks pressing their men and not allowing them to release into their route should give this generational group of edge rushers more time to win its reps and get to the quarterback. As long as the proper coaching is there -- which it seems to be -- this could be a truly historical unit for the Steelers.
