The Pittsburgh Steelers will start the 2026 NFL season with several new faces suited up as well as some familiar ones. Under the direction of head coach Mike McCarthy, the team looks to retool following another first-round playoff exit in 2025. The front office was praised for its offseason acquisitions for not only adding weapons to what it already had, but also filling voids that were caused from players departing from the franchise in free agency. General Manager Omar Khan worked proactively to add players to the roster on both sides of the ball, which created a challenge for wide receiver Roman Wilson.

The team added wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. via a trade with the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. He brings size on the outside to pair with DK Metcalf. Following that acquisition, the organization traded up in the draft with Indianapolis to select wide receiver Germie Bernard. The additions create an uphill battle and challenge for Wilson.
However, Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently discussed this challenge, while also giving credit to Wilson for putting in the work to improve for the 2026 campaign. While the additions to the wide receiver room could be an issue for the third-year wide receiver, it is not the worst situation to be in. Should the work he has put in translate to the field, Wilson could provide some added value and depth to the Black and Gold's offense.
"That means he has a lot of competition around him when it comes to getting snaps in the offense this season, and that could limit his chances to show his potential after he missed all but one game in his rookie year and then caught only 12 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns in 2025," Carter wrote. "Wilson is taking that challenge head on. With the goal of becoming a more complete receiver, he spent his offseason working with current and former NFL receivers. One was former NFL receiver turned trainer James Everett Jr. — whose nickname is 'Route God.'”
Wilson missed all but one game in his rookie season in Pittsburgh in 2024. The 2025 year that followed saw very limited production, as he had 12 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns. What could also play into his favor is that Bernard will be a rookie in 2026, so Wilson still could see his fair share of time on the field with a chance to make an impact on an offense that desperately needs it.

Steelers Could See Some Valuable Contributions From Wilson In 2026
While Wilson has been an underwhelming part of the roster in his first two seasons, there is one other aspect playing into his favor. The offense struggled mightily in 2025, putting up just 305.6 yards per game, which ranked 25th in total offense in the NFL. It was also recently reported that he has looked sharp in practice and is in a similar position as Bernard.
The attitude shown is also a good sign from the former Michigan wide receiver. For someone that has battled adversity essentially out of the gate to start his NFL career, Wilson has not backed down from challenges and has, in fact, faced them head on. These kind of mindset can help him grow as a person and as a player in hopes to finally get a longer look in the 2026 season.

While he still faces an uphill battle as he works to prove himself in the league, added depth and production at the wide receiver position is certainly welcomed for an offense that struggled like the Steelers did in 2025.
Given the offseason work that Wilson has put in as well as what he has shown in practice, he has the chance to break out in 2026. Because his new head coach is offensive-minded, being a weapon on that side of the ball that finds a way to break out in his own sense of the term would be huge for his career in 2026.
