Steelers' Most Surprising Free Agent Suggestion Just Dropped Ahead Of 2026 Training Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into training camp with one of the most intriguing rosters they have assembled in years, but not every position group is walking into Latrobe, PA without question marks. The inside linebacker room has been a topic of growing concern all offseason, and now a former Steelers QB is putting a name out there that nobody saw coming.

On a recent episode of The Snap Count on Big Play Sports Network, former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch made a suggestion that is going to get Steelers fans talking immediately. Batch was breaking down the position groups heading into training camp and discussing which free agents who are still available could potentially find a home in Pittsburgh. When the conversation turned to the linebacker room, Batch did not hesitate to bring up a future Hall of Famer who is still sitting on the market.

"Bobby Wagner is definitely a name that I think the Steelers might want to kick the tires on if we're not seeing what we want to see from that linebacking crew. He's a future Hall of Famer. First ballot. And he's a player that everybody in the NFL loves. All the coaches love him because of his veteran leadership and what he's been able to do. And he's still been very productive."

That is not a name that comes out of nowhere. As SteelerNation previously covered, the Steelers have had legitimate interest in Bobby Wagner before and now here we are again with his name resurfacing at a time when Pittsburgh's inside linebacker room has real questions surrounding it. Patrick Queen is entering the final year of his contract and has been inconsistent. Payton Wilson has shown flashes but has never been a full-time starter.

Cole Holcomb and Malik Harrison are the veterans behind them. Batch is essentially saying that if any of those pieces fail to hold up when the pads come on during training camp, Wagner could be exactly the kind of veteran plug-in that stabilizes the group.

Steelers' Linebacker Room Could Use A Bobby Wagner Insurance Policy In 2026

The case for Wagner goes beyond just what he can do on the field. At 36 years old, he is not the same player he was during his peak years with the Seattle Seahawks, but Batch made the point that Wagner is still extremely productive. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the top linebackers in the NFL as recently as last season, and his football IQ remains elite. More importantly, he was the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, which tells you everything you need to know about the kind of leader and locker room presence he would bring to a Mike McCarthy coaching staff that is still building its culture in Pittsburgh. You do not need Wagner to be a 170 tackle monster anymore. You need him to be a steady, smart, physical presence that can step in when the group needs it most.

The timing of Batch's suggestion also makes sense from a practical standpoint. Wagner is still a free agent with no team having signed him yet. Training camps across the league are about to open and inevitably injuries will happen. If Queen or Wilson goes down early or if the inside linebacker room simply does not look ready when the real competition starts, Omar Khan and McCarthy will need to make a move quickly. Having Wagner already on their radar means they would not be scrambling to find a solution from scratch. They already know what he brings. They have apparently liked him before, and at this stage of the offseason, his price tag should be extremely reasonable for a team that invested heavily in other positions.
