The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of work to do to their roster before they can head full steam into the regular season. While trimming down the active roster is what the front office is focused on, there are still opportunities out there to improve the team. Depth goes a long way in the season and with plenty of great options on the team currently, injuries are less detrimental on the results of games. One position on the roster that Pittsburgh can certainly deepen however, is at receiver.

The Steelers actually have more depth at receiver than they've had in years past. Joining DK Metcalf is veteran Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie Germie Bernard. Even among their returners, Roman Wilson deserves a lot of credit for making this unit look better on the depth chart.
There are plenty of weapons for Aaron Rodgers to work with this season. It'll be an entirely different group than what they had in 2025, especially when it got near the end of the year. The Steelers scrambled for any help possible at receiver, adding multiple veterans nearing the end of their careers in Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. While having guys that have played in many big games helps the young guys on the roster, they didn't provide enough help for the Steelers to make it past the Houston Texans in the playoffs.
Pittsburgh has a deep group that can help get the team to the postseason again, but with injuries, it couldn't hurt to add another guy to the mix. Former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman presented an intriguing idea for the Steelers to pursue. He stated on his own podcast that he thinks the Steelers could use Stefon Diggs.
"I think a team with a young receiving core, an inexperienced receiving core, could take a shot at him," Sherman stated. "You know, maybe like the Cleveland Browns. Can the Pittsburgh Steelers use him? I think they could. He could go a lot of places and help make a football team better."
Adding Diggs, a former All-Pro receiver, why not? While he is dealing with some off-the-field issues, there's no question that adding his skill set to the organization would help increase production on the field. This team needs to be efficient on offense with one of the most expensive defenses in the league. Not being a complete team is what has held this franchise back from winning postseason games in the past. They have both now and if they make the overall team better on offense, it may take some pressure off the defense.

At 32, Diggs was still a strong receiver last season. With the New England Patriots, he hauled in 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 11.9 yards per reception. There's still plenty of football to get out of the veteran at this point in his career and targeting him isn't a bad idea for this organization.
One issue with another addition to the receiver room is forcing a rookie off the roster, such as Eli Heidenreich. While he isn't a standout player, adding a hometown guy and finding a spot on special teams would have been cool for him. Adding Diggs would likely make him a cut candidate.
Steelers Might Consider Signing Stefon Diggs
There's still some time before the Steelers get rocking and rolling in Latrobe, PA for training camp. Until then, there are still opportunities to improve the roster. That includes working on contracts between Keeanu Benton and Joey Porter Jr. While extensions still need work, Pittsburgh can still approach free agency to find upgrades for the roster.

Sherman suggests Diggs could really help the Steelers with a young core, such as Wilson and Bernard. Time will tell if Pittsburgh makes a move in this department, but if they do, the offense could look even more dangerous on paper.
