There have been plenty of names going around for who'll be playing quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers next, but what might be the real question is when the Steelers will find their next signal-caller. It would not exactly be the end of the world to see a competition between Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudolph to give the two substantial time as starters. While this plays out, this lines up 2023 free agent Kirk Cousins to step in and solidify Pittsburgh as contenders for years to come.
Cousins isn't the top five quarterback in the league everyone was hoping the Steelers would trade for this offseason, but his numbers and durability over the years are worth a serious look, rather than the undeserving initial scoff just hearing his name. Cousins has missed two games in the last seven seasons which is extremely rare for a quarterback nowadays. Along with his impressive ability to stay healthy, his numbers are very underrated as well accounting for 124 touchdowns and only 36 interceptions during his four years with the Minnesota Vikings.
It's easy to blame the Vikings lack of playoff appearances on their starting quarterback, but they had one of the most underperforming defenses and offensive lines which didn't provide Cousins which much support overall. Cousins is coming off arguably the best season of his career with 33 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 4,221 passing yards after following up an equally impressive 2020 season, so there's no reason to believe he isn't in the midst of his prime years.
If the Steelers opt to wait it out and see what they currently have on their roster, this leaves them ample opportunities to focus on regaining the elite offensive line they had not too long ago. Despite having some solid potential pieces on their current OL, the unit as a whole struggled mightily to provide protection all season. The thought of Cousins behind a revamped line with the offensive weapons the Steelers possess aligns them for success for years to come.
