The Pittsburgh Steelers have had their share of challenges this season, but amidst the struggles, a shining star has emerged. George Pickens, in his second year as a wide receiver, is already being compared to Steelers legend, Hines Ward. With 27 receptions, 500 yards, and 2 touchdowns, Pickens is making a significant impact on the Steelers' offense. However, it's not just his receiving skills that have caught the attention of fans and experts alike. Pickens is garnering praise for his exuberant and selfless pass-blocking, a trait that draws comparisons to the former Super Bowl MVP, Ward.

Hines Ward: A Steelers Legacy of Excellence

Ward, a name synonymous with Steelers football, was celebrated for his elite receiving abilities. However, his legacy extended far beyond his catches. Ward was renowned for his grit, toughness, and his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get involved in the nitty-gritty aspects of the game, especially blocking. His exceptional blocking skills not only protected the quarterback and fellow receivers, but also paved the way for explosive runs and yards after the catch (YAC) to become a defining feature of the Steelers offense.

Former Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats recently made a compelling comparison between Pickens and Ward on his podcast The Arthur Moats Experience With Deke. He commended Pickens for his enthusiastic approach to pass blocking, emphasizing that it's not just about capability, but also the willingness to go the extra mile—a quality that hasn't always been evident in Steelers receivers.

The Importance of Winning Blocks

Moats underscored the significance of one-on-one blocks on the perimeter for the success of the running game. While winning the route as a receiver is crucial, it's equally essential to excel in blocking and create opportunities for running backs to break free for significant gains. In the NFL, every yard matters, and it's the collective effort that drives a team forward.

“You can’t have explosive runs, long breaking runs if your receivers are not winning their one-on-one blocks on the perimeter. It’s not just about winning the route. You also have to win the block.”

Pickens' approach to blocking stood out to Moats, who not only praised his technique, but also his football intelligence. While most of the focus has been on Pickens needing to control his emotions, Moats noted that Pickens goes the extra mile to finish his blocks effectively and pull off, rather than attempting the last-minute tug that often leads to penalties. This attention to detail and selflessness in blocking sets him apart as a receiver who understands the broader dynamics of the game.

Celebrating Selflessness

Moats painted a vivid picture of Pickens' post-block celebrations, underlining the infectious and selfless spirit with which he plays. When Pickens successfully completes a block, his enthusiasm is palpable.

“I love the way that George is not only attacking, I love his technique and his smarts. Whenever guys are getting to the point where they are about to get off of the block, he’s not trying to get that last little tug that always gets called. When he finishes blocks, you watch how he celebrates man. You would have thought he caught a deep pass on somebody the way he’s getting up and flexing, beating on his chest, and that’s just selfless and contagious.”

The impact of Pickens' exuberant pass blocking extends far beyond the immediate play. It sends a clear message to his teammates, setting a standard that transcends individual glory. Moats highlighted the motivation it provides to the entire team, emphasizing that if a big-time receiver like Pickens can celebrate a block with such zeal, it challenges everyone to step up and contribute in every way possible.

“If I see my big-time receiver out there celebrating a block, what do you think that’s going to say about me if I’m not the big-time receiver? Oh, I am trying to go get me one because if he can do it, what is my excuse? There is none. Same thing on the defensive side of the ball. If I see an offensive guy getting after it, there's no way I am going to let an offensive guy go harder than me.”

In a season that presents its share of challenges, the Steelers find inspiration in players like Pickens. As the Steelers navigate the complexities of the season, Pickens' dedication to every block may very well become a cornerstone of their resurgence. With a team united by the spirit of selflessness and a commitment to leaving it all on the field, the Steelers continue to strive for seven.
