On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers teased a special announcement on their Twitter / X account. All kinds of speculation immediately ensued, from Color Rush jerseys on primetime against the New England Patriots, to stadium tours and NFL Draft announcements. The next day, the Steelers posted their announcement at 3:00 P.M. ET, just as they promised. Some of the speculation was half-right.

Steelers' Jersey Announcement

The potential throwback or alternative uniform announcement was the most likely speculation. While it is not exactly what everyone thought, the rumors were somewhat accurate.

As opposed to wearing their popular Color Rush jerseys versus the Patriots, the Steelers will be wearing their throwback uniforms with block lettering in their upcoming matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The last time they wore these uniforms were in Week 16 of the 2022 season, when they faced the Las Vegas Raiders on the night of Christmas Eve.

In that Raiders/Steelers game, they chose that contest to wear the block numbers because it was the day after the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. The Steelers also faced the Raiders in that game, even though they were in Oakland at that time.

They also chose that game to honor Franco Harris and retire his jersey, although he unfortunately passed away just prior to that weekend. That game meant more to the Steelers than most regular season games do, and they played it with the right jersey to remember that legacy. Those throwbacks represent more than just the Steelers. They represent that dominant era of Steelers football.

The Steelers have not used any alternative jerseys in 2023 prior to their Week 10 matchup against the Packers. They usually reserve their Color Rush uniforms for primetime games, although they have yet to wear them in the three prior primetime games that they have played in during the 2023 season. They could still opt to use them for the Thursday Night Football game against the Patriots, but for now, this Week 10 matchup is the only one that is confirmed to have an alternative jersey of some sort.
