The Pittsburgh Steelers have a history with wide receivers who sometimes exhibit diva-like behavior, and this trend appeared to take root during the Antonio Brown era. During the 2023 season, Diontae Johnson has faced criticism for his occasional lack of effort, celebrating seemingly meaningless touchdowns, and his overall attitude.

Another wide receiver who has displayed frustration and anger throughout the 2023 season is George Pickens. Drafted 52nd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Pickens was considered a much greater talent than a second-round pick. However, concerns about his attitude seemed to deter some general managers from taking a chance on the talented receiver from the University of Georgia.

As the disappointing 2023 season unfolded, Steelers fans began to wonder whether it was time to explore the trade market for players like Johnson and Pickens, both of whom have exhibited diva-like behavior. While Pickens is a 22-year-old receiver with immense talent, a respected reporter for CBS Sports, Aditi Kinkhabwala, suggests that trading him might be more challenging than expected.

“You are assuming there is a buyer here. The year he came out, I had multiple convos w/ multiple GMs who said he was the most talented WR that year - and yet, not on their board. Those same GMs said if any coach would reach him, it was Mike Tomlin. Here we are.”

Kinkhabwala raises doubts about whether there would even be any buyers for Pickens. She points out that when Pickens entered the NFL, multiple general managers considered him the most talented wide receiver in his draft class, yet he was not on their draft boards. Some of these same GMs believed that if any coach could reach Pickens, it would be Mike Tomlin, the head coach of the Steelers. However, this year has shown that this belief may not hold true, at least not yet.

Throughout the season, there have been instances where Pickens appeared to quit on plays and expressed his frustrations, despite being advised by teammates and coaches to manage his emotions better. While Pickens may argue that his talent level justifies his occasional outbursts, the importance of adhering to team discipline and maintaining a positive attitude cannot be understated.

In terms of on-field performance during the 2023 season, Pickens has amassed 52 receptions, 814 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. While these numbers may not be considered exceptional, they are relatively impressive considering the circumstances. In fact, Pickens is currently tied for 28th in receiving yards among all NFL receivers.

Despite his undeniable talent, Kinkhabwala's perspective suggests that there may be hesitation among NFL teams to acquire Pickens. This notion might come as a surprise, given his potential as a rare and gifted wide receiver. However, his inability to manage his emotions and conduct himself appropriately may be a deterrent for potential suitors.

For Pickens, his future in a Steelers uniform remains uncertain. The Steelers have a history of parting ways with problematic receivers when necessary, and Pickens is no exception. While his talent is undeniable, realizing his full potential will require him to improve his emotional management and attitude.

The Steelers are expected to persist in their efforts to develop Pickens and help him realize his full potential. However, even the most patient organizations have their limits. The crucial factor to consider is the extent to which Pickens' behavior is affecting the team, as perceived by his teammates and coaches. If coaches begin addressing it in postgame discussions and press conferences, it may indicate that the situation is already escalating.

As the 2023 season unfolds, the question of whether Pickens will remain a Steeler will remain a popular topic of discussion. Regardless of Pickens' future, one thing is clear. If he wants to reach the heights of his potential, he must learn to navigate the challenges of his emotions and conduct himself as a professional athlete. Especially with the attention you get as a wide receiver for the Steelers.
