The Pittsburgh Steelers need to improve their cornerback room and after two days of the 2024 NFL Draft not making a single move, many may have thought it would make sense to bring back Patrick Peterson on a one-year, team-friendly deal. The front office is certainly in the mood for a reunion, but it may not be with the veteran who is a future Hall of Fame candidate. Embroiled in controversy, former Steelers' cornerback Cameron Sutton was released by the Detroit Lions following just one season.

Steelers cornerback, Cameron Sutton (#20) stretches during 2022 training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the news early on Saturday morning. It appears as Sutton coming back to the Steel City isn't as far-fetched of an idea as many may have thought it was.
Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan met with former Steelers CB Cam Sutton last week in Pittsburgh, per sources.

The Steelers are desperate for help at cornerback, and if Sutton's legal situation turns out to be less of a concern than previously thought, he could absolutely be wearing the black and gold again in 2024. Sutton has 101 professional games to his credit and would be an awesome addition to a secondary that is seriously lacking depth.
The 2017 third-round pick played his first six seasons with the Steelers before slipping away in 2023 free agency. He signed a lucrative contract, but the Lions moved on quickly after it was reported that there was a warrant out for his arrest. The legal proceedings are ongoing, but the meeting between General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin signal a mutual interest in reuniting.

This news will come with mixed opinions given what is going for Sutton away from the football field, but Tomlin is not a guy who will turn his back on a former player. If the two sides met last week, it is likely that the goal was to understand a little bit more about Sutton's situation. After that, if the Steelers felt comfortable and the draft didn't play out properly, the veteran corner would come back to the city he called home for half a dozen seasons.

Steelers Looking For Player To Pair With Joey Porter Jr.
Pittsburgh traded Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers and picked up Donte Jackson in return, but the cornerback room is far from solidified. The report from Dulac could be a great reason why the organization failed to draft a player at the position on the first two days of the 2024 NFL Draft. Sutton could, pending his off-the-field situation, be back in the Steel City soon.
