The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2024 NFL Draft with several critical needs on their agenda, notably the reinforcement of their offensive line. This mission was promptly addressed in the first two rounds with the selections of Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier. However, their efforts didn't stop there. In the fourth round, with the 119th overall pick, the Steelers secured another valuable asset for their line by drafting guard Mason McCormick from South Dakota State.

McCormick brings with him a wealth of experience, having competed in 70 college games. Renowned for his gritty and physical playing style, he's unafraid to tackle the dirty work on the field. Despite his ferocity during games, off the field, McCormick is known for his remarkable kindness. Throughout his college career, he garnered numerous accolades, including All-American and All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors four times.
His aspiration to join the Steelers stemmed from his profound respect for the organization and the belief that it was an ideal fit for him. McCormick wasted no time integrating into the Steelers' lineup, participating in rookie mini-camp with enthusiasm. When questioned by the media during the camp, he was asked about his decision to stay at a smaller school, despite potentially lucrative offers elsewhere via the NIL. McCormick's response was refreshingly simple.
“Yes, I had offers. The temptation was not there. South Dakota State gave so much to me and developed me into who I am now. Who am I to leave South Dakota State? They poured so much into me, I feel like they should be able to reap the benefits of what they helped create.”
McCormick acknowledged that his football abilities could have opened doors to prestigious power five conferences, where lucrative offers backed by boosters or larger schools awaited. However, such considerations never crossed McCormick's mind.
“Sure some money would be cool or whatever but ultimately my loyalties lie with the people that are good to me.”
McCormick was raised with a fundamental principle: to treat others better than they treat him. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with the values in Pittsburgh. His loyalty is unwavering, as he harbored no desire to exploit the school that had invested so much in him. His steadfast commitment is a reflection of his character.
“I think that’s just the way I was raised. People that are good to you, you should be great to them and give back to them. That’s just the way it’s always been for me.”
He comes to a Steelers team that has had a struggling offensive line, but one that has been working hard to improve in that regard. McCormick wasn't the highest rated guard on the board, but many pundits had him ranked as a hidden gem.

Steelers Offensive Line Has A Bright Future
The Steelers offensive line has faced challenges, prompting Pittsburgh to place a clear emphasis on improvement in this crucial area. In the NFL, a sturdy offensive line is indispensable for securing victories.
Demonstrating their commitment, the Steelers have now selected offensive linemen in the first round for two consecutive years. In 2023, they traded up to acquire Broderick Jones, and in 2024, they secured Fautanu with the 20th pick, a move that should prove incredibly fruitful. Adding Frazier as their center in the second round further fortified their lineup.
