In free agency, Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Lions. During his single season in Detroit, he recorded 65 tackles, one forced fumble, six passes defensed, and one interception, starting all 17 games. However, on March 7, it was revealed that a warrant was out for his arrest due to an alleged domestic violence incident. Sutton failed to turn himself in for two weeks, leading to his release from the Lions.

There were rumors and reports that the Steelers held Sutton in high regard and were considering bringing him back after his release. On Wednesday, they made it official by signing Sutton to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum. This swift turn of events has left many fans with questions about the legal issues surrounding him.

Pittsburgh reporter Jenna Harner asked Sutton what message he has for fans concerned about the incident that led to his release from the Lions.

“It is an opinion-based world. Everybody kind of moves on the movement of not knowing, but feels the presence or space to speak. My job is not to appeal to someone else.”

Sutton obviously has many people with strong opinions about the alleged domestic abuse case pending against him. He has been formally charged with misdemeanor battery. Despite this, Sutton is not concerned with how people perceive him.

"I'm never worried about a narrative. I'm never worried about what necessarily people say because obviously more than likely, they don't know me more than anybody else. You know what I mean? And again, it gets back to just your foundation, your morals, who you are individually as a human being and just what you stand on. Holding my head high."

Sutton is hopeful that he can leave the past behind and move forward in a more positive direction.

“Again, everybody goes through adversity, everybody goes through things in their life that can change in both directions. So it's all about how you stand on that and what you do from that. And like I said, I'm ready to keep moving in the right direction. Everything else will keep falling in line and we just keep moving from there.”

The reality is that whatever happened is now between the legal system, Sutton, and those involved. From a purely football perspective, acquiring a player who signed a $33 million, three-year contract just a season ago for the veteran minimum is a huge win.
