The Pittsburgh Steelers were hit with surprising news this offseason when veteran Cam Heyward announced his decision to skip Organized Team Activities (OTAs) for the first time in his long career. Heyward clarified that his absence was a strategic move to secure a new deal from Pittsburgh, emphasizing that he needed to prioritize his own interests.

Heyward returned to the team during the third and final week of OTAs, much to the excitement of Steelers fans. However, he stated that his return did not signify any progress regarding his contract negotiations. Despite being an outstanding player throughout his career, Heyward, now 35, struggled with injuries during the 2023 season, which affected his on-field performance.

Entering the final year of his four-year, $64 million contract signed in 2020, Heyward expressed his clear intentions for the future. He hopes to play at least two more seasons in the NFL, ideally three, with a preference for staying in Pittsburgh. Heyward discussed his ongoing contract situation in an interview with popular media personality Jim Rome. During his time speaking with Rome, Heyward detailed his plan to play in 2024 and hopefully return in 2025 on a new deal.

"I don't wanna say how likely something is 'cause you just never know," Heyward told Rome. "Obviously, I would love to be a Pittsburgh Steeler for the rest of my career. Getting a contract would lay claim to that. My goal is to be a Pittsburgh Steeler this year and have a good year to hopefully come back and play more games with them."

Heyward has made it clear that he intends to finish his career in Pittsburgh. However, he is also prepared to continue his career with another organization if necessary.

"Obviously, l'd like to be in Pittsburgh," Heyward told Rome. "But if it comes to it, I will play in another city."

Heyward has made several such statements this offseason, even joking about having family in Cleveland. This led the media to speculate about a possible move to the Cleveland Browns, a notion that Heyward said nearly made his wife throw up. He addressed these Browns rumors again during his conversation with Rome.

"I would never want to play for, not only a rival, but a team [where] there's such bad blood there. I don't think I could do that."

Steelers fans can likely cross off at least three teams from Heyward's potential destinations. They have been curious about his plans if he and the organization fail to reach an agreement before the season.

The Steelers have a longstanding rule of not negotiating with players during the season, so if a new deal isn't reached before the year begins, discussions will have to wait until the end of the 2024 season.

Steelers' Cam Heyward Appears Ready To Play In Pittsburgh In 2024

Heyward seems prepared to play out the final year of his contract in Pittsburgh and then revisit his contract hopes with the team afterward. He has made it clear that he is comfortable finishing his career elsewhere if necessary. While the Steelers would hate to see him leave, the complexities of business decisions in the NFL can sometimes outweigh all else.

Heyward underwent surgery this offseason for a groin injury sustained early in the 2023 season. Now healthy and ready to silence his doubters, he is set to play with significant motivation in the upcoming season. Steelers fans are excited to see Heyward back at full strength, contributing to one of the best defenses in football. They eagerly await the organization’s response to his request for a new deal.
