The Pittsburgh Steelers have always been known for their formidable defense. Throughout many seasons, the Steelers' defense has been a force to reckon with. Recently, while the offense has struggled, the defense has carried the team. During Dick LeBeau's tenure as the defensive coordinator from 2004-2014, the Steelers' defense was exceptionally strong. LeBeau's defense was so dominant that NFL rules were changed in response to their play.

One key player in LeBeau's defense was Ike Taylor, a two-time Super Bowl champion who played for the Steelers from 2003-2014. Coached by LeBeau for most of his career, Taylor started 140 games, earned 14 interceptions, defended 134 passes, and combined for 636 tackles. Taylor thrived in LeBeau's system and was a standout player.

Taylor, now a host on the podcast Bleav in Steelers, recently had his former defensive coordinator as a guest. During the episode, Taylor and LeBeau shared a very emotional and heartwarming moment, reflecting on their time together and the bond they formed.

“You know not only as a coach, but just helping me as a young man," Taylor said on the Bleav in Steelers podcast. "You doing that just by showing your leadership. You did not say much, but whenever you spoke like you said when you did raise your voice, all of us tuned in. I just wanted to say, man, thank you so much for just being the person you were and leading by example.”

Taylor's message to LeBeau was heartfelt and kind, bringing LeBeau to the brink of tears. Deeply moved, LeBeau made sure to thank Taylor for everything he had done for him, expressing his profound gratitude.

“You guys did not need any leadership," said LeBeau. "I just want to say I love you, Ike Taylor. Thanks for all you did for me pal.”

LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh for a second stint with the team after an initial, brief tenure as defensive coordinator in 1995. When he came back, he played a pivotal role in revitalizing Pittsburgh's defense, helping the team regain its dominance.

His strategic brilliance was a major factor in Pittsburgh's appearance in three Super Bowls during his time, winning two of them with him as their defensive coordinator.

Steelers' Dick LeBeau Was A Defensive Mastermind

Under LeBeau's leadership, Pittsburgh implemented an innovative zone blitz strategy. This defensive approach sent unpredictable pass rushes and coverages from various players, effectively confusing opposing offenses and causing them to panic. His 3-4 defense system was particularly well-suited to Pittsburgh's personnel, allowing the team to excel. LeBeau's schemes were instrumental in countering the surge of West Coast offenses that were sweeping the NFL at the time.
