The Pittsburgh Steelers received unfortunate news on Monday. It was reported that newly reunited cornerback Cam Sutton would be facing an eight-game suspension from the league. This suspension follows a warrant for Sutton's arrest due to an alleged domestic violence incident. After turning himself in following a delay, Sutton was released by the Detroit Lions. Given Sutton's previous tenure with the Steelers, the team decided to give him a second chance this offseason.

Now, Pittsburgh finds itself back at square one in the cornerback position. The Steelers brought in Sutton to strengthen their secondary. With Joey Porter Jr. and Donte Jackson covering the outsides, they were hopeful Sutton could handle the nickelback role. With him serving his suspension, the team must now rely on a backup or seek help outside the organization.
Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo revealed that Pittsburgh is very interested in two potential cornerback options that played with the team in 2023. Both Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan were part of the Steelers roster during the 2023 season.

Peterson played for the Steelers during the 2023 season after a long career with the Arizona Cardinals and two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Following the 2023 season, Pittsburgh decided to release him. Throughout the offseason, Peterson has expressed hope for another opportunity to play for the Steelers in 2024, a hope that now seems more likely.
Sullivan signed a one-year deal with the Steelers for the 2023 season. After the season ended, Pittsburgh chose not to renew his contract. During his time with the Steelers, Sullivan started in two games, recording 22 combined tackles, one forced fumble, six passes defended, and one interception. With six years of NFL experience, Sullivan would bring confidence and stability to the cornerback room.

Peterson, an eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, had a distinguished career, but struggled to maintain a high level of play in 2023. While not performing poorly, some Steelers fans felt he had lost a step. Toward the end of the season, Peterson transitioned to safety and performed solidly, which could make his return to the Steelers an exciting prospect for fans, especially if signed at a lower cost.
Steelers Still Have Options At Cornerback
It's unclear if the Steelers are interested in signing both Peterson and Sullivan or just one. If it comes down to a choice between the two, bringing back Sullivan would add youth and experience to the team. At nearly 28 years old, Sullivan has significant potential yet to be fully realized.

Peterson, nearing 34, has had an incredible career but is now facing the challenge of age. Asking him to play nickelback at this stage is not ideal, but it's not the worst option either. The good news is that the Steelers have other backup options and players on the depth chart who can step up if needed.
When Pittsburgh decided to give Sutton a second chance, they anticipated potential consequences. The NFL's investigation determined he violated league policies, resulting in an eight-game suspension. Steelers fans are now curious if this situation will pave the way for Peterson to return for another season in Pittsburgh.
