Football teams are increasingly expanding the way they engage with fans. The Pittsburgh Steelers are no different. The traditional ways haven’t been discarded; fans can still buy merchandise and jerseys, and get photos with their favorite players. However, the influence of innovative digital technology is being felt in more and more ways.

Fans can stay connected through the Steelers' mobile app and interactive social media campaigns, while game day at Acrisure Stadium is a festival of entertainment which, in addition to live performances, includes state-of-the-art VR experiences, and interactive fan zones. The team has also embraced trending media like podcasts and streaming with its own shows and documentaries, as well as popular forms of online gaming like casino slots having launched its own branded game called Pittsburgh Steelers Deluxe in collaboration with developer Everi.

Steelers Take Lead On Immersive Entertainment

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ willingness to introduce innovative technologies was evident in 2017 when it was one of the first major sports teams in North America to offer fans fascinating 360-degree virtual reality videos celebrating the franchise’s history and traditions. It partnered with the VR production company, MANDT VR, to revolutionize how fans experience game day at Acrisure Stadium, providing an unparalleled perspective of what it's like on gameday.

A year later, the Steelers introduced augmented reality too. Working with developer YinzCam, fans can access interactive experiences and AR content directly on their mobile devices through a dedicated app. One standout feature is the Terrible Towel Wall. By simply pointing their phones at the display, fans can unlock videos and photo galleries that celebrate the iconic symbol of Steelers pride.

Fan interaction through mobile content has understandably swept through the NFL. Recognizing the huge growth of online casino games, the Steelers not only developed their own branded roulette and blackjack games alongside tech firm Evolution but created the popular Pittsburgh Steelers Deluxe three-reel, nine-payline slot game. The market for such gambling platforms, especially jackpot slots like big-name games such as Dr. Fortuno and Elysian Jackpots, continues to grow in North America. The Steelers’ official game celebrates the franchise’s rich history, boasts recognizable symbols, and features four jackpot prizes.

A View On The Future

Undoubtedly, the Steelers will continue seeking ways to improve and enhance engagement with fans through digital technology. Its interactive mobile experiences have already showcased how integrating digital strategies can enhance fan engagement in addition to operational efficiency. Going forward, AR, VR and data analytics will play an increasingly pivotal role in creating engaging and personalized experiences, while emerging markets such as eSports enable established NFL teams to broaden their reach.

In addition, companies like Satisfi Labs have created dedicated AI chat services for NFL teams. These chatbots are customizable with team colors and avatars, and can even handle ticket sales and other fan queries. This technology is still in its infancy, however, the Houston Astros MLB team, for instance, has already used AI to sell single-game tickets, generating significant revenue and saving labor hours.

As of right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers exemplify how innovative digital technologies can revolutionize fan engagement. By leveraging the likes of AR, VR, and interactive mobile content, the Steelers are creating immersive experiences that deepen fan connection and extend their reach
