The Pittsburgh Steelers made surprising news this offseason by deciding not to pick up running back Najee Harris' fifth-year option. Reports suggest that the team wants to see how Harris performs in a full season under new Offensive Coordinator, Arthur Smith, before making a longer-term commitment.

Drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Harris has been a reliable performer, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons with Pittsburgh and never missing a start. Given his consistent production, many assumed the Steelers would reward him by picking up his fifth-year option.

Had they exercised the option, Harris would have been guaranteed approximately $6.79 million for the 2025 season. Instead, he now faces a contract year in 2024 and will become a free agent afterward. Harris had avoided speaking to the Pittsburgh media and even made an unusual entrance to training camp.

However, Harris eventually spoke to the media in a video shared by Steelers reporter Chris Adamski. When asked about his feelings on the declined option, Harris admitted he was not happy, but said he couldn't waste time dwelling on it.

“Nah, I mean like, I was disappointed for a minute, but I mean there is nothing really where me sitting around being disappointed for too long will do anything to help me out.”

Harris was disappointed to learn that the Steelers weren't interested in extending his contract early. He likely feels he has proven himself worthy of having his option picked up.

Despite this, Harris is maintaining a positive mindset and is ready to get to work.

“It is what it is and you just got to keep pushing. Knowing that coming out here and doing what is best for the team and having a good year. Having a good year is what is most important right now. Yeah, I was for a couple days, but it just passed my mind so fast.”

Steelers' Najee Harris Expected To Have Massive 2024 Season

The Steelers' offense is set for a much-improved season under Smith, and with an enhanced offensive line, many expect Harris to have a career year. If he performs as anticipated, his value may surpass the amount the Steelers would have paid him for the 2025 season.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan addressed the decision not to pick up Harris' option, emphasizing that the team still hopes Harris will be part of their future. However, they felt it was the right choice not to guarantee his option at this time.

The Steelers will rely heavily on their running back duo of Harris and Jaylen Warren. Given the challenging market for running backs, where teams are often cautious about investing significant money, the Steelers appear to be following this trend by exercising caution with Harris. They also appear to have a lot of faith in Warren's abilities as well.

Harris' reaction to the declined option is understandable. He is motivated to excel in the 2024 season and prove his worth as an elite running back. It will be intriguing to see how the Steelers' long-term plans for the running back position develop and whether Harris remains a part of them.
