In 2020, the linebacker left as a free agent and is set to act as a special teams addition to Mike Tomlin’s roster. Last season, the Steelers completed a 10-7 regular season before falling to Matakevich’s Bills in the Wild Card round, 17-31.
Long-running head coach Tomlin is looking to get his side challenging for the AFC North again, having last won the division in 2020 and can do with all the help he can get in terms of improving things in terms of strength in depth.

Tomlin has spoken of the importance of bringing in strong special team players and what it can mean to Pittsburgh’s chances of making a sustained impact in the postseason, commenting,
“I know proven, capable special teams are significant. When you’re faced with the unknown of the kickoff, and regardless of position, Tyler is a known commodity in that space. One that we’re familiar with, one that everybody in the NFL’s familiar with. It’s just prudent business, facing what we’re facing in terms of the unknown, in terms of the impact of that play on our game.”
Mike Tomlin has also addressed the factor of earlier training camp times,
“We’re forever changing; I don’t know that there's anything different. Every year, we’re trying to figure out how to do things better, more professional, in an effort to produce a better finished product. A collective that’s ready for action. And so it’s just part of our process. Sometimes, we come across a new technology, sometimes, it’s based on notes from previous experience. Sometimes, interesting things come with new people from other places.” Tomlin concluded.
The Steelers coach has also made it clear that Russell Wilson is still ahead of Justin Fields when it comes to the starting quarterback spot. Tomlin has been around the block more than most. This will be his 18th season in charge of Pittsburgh, and he is clearly ready for battle.

Wilson was brought in over the offseason after failing to make much of an impact during his two seasons as a member of the Denver Broncos. Prior to this, he had been a huge success with the Seattle Seahawks, helping them to a Super Bowl triumph in just his second season.
The 35-year-old veteran will hope to hit the ground running when the Steelers travel to Georgia to take on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
