For the first two days of training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers held their new starting quarterback, Russell Wilson, out of practice as a precaution due to some calf tightness. Because of this, Justin Fields has been taking first-team reps for the team. He got to lead the team out for their "seven shots" drill, where the first-team offense usually gets four chances to score while the second-team offense usually gets three. Each touchdown counts as a point for the offense, while each stop counts as a point for the defense.

Instead of the usual reps, Mike Tomlin put Fields and the first-team offense back out for the final snap of seven shots. The drill was tied at 3-3, and Fields had the chance to lead the charge and secure an early win for the offense. He did not deliver as one would have hoped.

Fields ended the day with one completion on five attempts, which directly led to the defense winning the drill. His backup, Kyle Allen, had two reps in the drill, and he completed both to give the offense a chance to win. Instead, Tomlin opted to bring the first teams out to give Fields the opportunity to come in clutch, but he did not. Fields has been having a rough beginning to training camp overall, and it could severely hurt his chances of ever replacing Wilson as the team's top quarterback.

Steelers Have Seen Flashes Of Fields' Talent
The one pass that he did complete was a perfect pass in the back of the end zone. He definitely has the arm talent, and he can show it off when needed. He also threw an absolute dime to Van Jefferson on the first day of training camp, where he was able to locate it away from the incoming safety, Damontae Kazee. The talent is definitely there for Fields, but he needs to work on his mechanics and his accuracy if he wants to be a starting quarterback at the professional level again.

Once Wilson comes back, Fields will run seven shots with the second-team offense to try and get his groove back. However, calf injuries can be really nagging, and that could give Fields more chances to try and develop with the first-team offense. He will be given plenty of chances throughout training camp to work with both teams, but if he can't develop as expected, he could end up competing with Allen for the primary backup spot, as opposed to competing with Wilson for the role of starting quarterback.
