The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled their quarterback roster after the 2023 season, parting ways with all three QBs who played for them last year. This offseason, they signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum and acquired another quarterback, Justin Fields, in a trade with the Chicago Bears.

The new quarterbacks have sparked much discussion about the upcoming battle for the starting position. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that Wilson starts in the pole position, meaning he has a slight advantage in the competition.

However, Tomlin emphasized that Fields will have a genuine opportunity to compete for the job. The term pole position often refers to having an initial advantage, but it doesn't guarantee victory. Tomlin spoke with reporter Evan Washburn to clarify his perspective on the quarterback competition.
"Man, we got two really capable guys," Tomlin said. "Guys that are comfortable being the guy. We're gonna create an environment where they get an opportunity to compete and show what they're capable of."
Tomlin acknowledged that they plan to create a genuine competition between the two quarterbacks. He elaborated on what the Steelers mean by saying Wilson has the pole position, explaining that it refers to Wilson currently being the leading contender but not guaranteed the starting spot.

The team wants to ensure a competitive environment where both players can showcase their skills, pushing each other to perform at their best. This approach is designed to bring out the best in both quarterbacks and determine the ideal choice for the team.
“Obviously we have been really consistent about the positioning of it throughout the offseason. We described it as Russ having pole position. Meaning that they are going to be given an opportunity to compete but I just think it’s important to lean on his experience and expertise relative to the things that come outside of playing. To provide direction for the unit and things of that nature.”
Wilson has been limited in training camp and missed the start of practice due to a sore calf. He sustained the injury while pushing a sled during a conditioning test. Although the injury is considered minor, the Steelers are being cautious with Wilson. Meanwhile, Tomlin believes that Fields has taken full advantage of the additional reps in Wilson's absence.
“It’s been really good, Justin has really taken advantage of the opportunity for additional snaps because Russ has been out here the first week. Really excited about the trajectory of it. Excited about continuing to go with the process and having them display their skills.”
Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion has solidified his reputation as an elite quarterback despite struggling in his last two seasons with the Denver Broncos. Now, at 35, he remains confident in his ability to perform at a high level and is eager to prove himself as the starter with the Steelers. Wilson aims to move past his Denver struggles and make a fresh impact in Pittsburgh.
Steelers' Justin Fields Is The More Exciting Option At QB
In contrast, Fields, at just 25, represents a more exciting long-term option for the Steelers. If Fields proves himself, he could be the answer for the quarterback position for over a decade, while Wilson’s best-case scenario might only offer a few years. The Steelers will need to decide after the 2024 season whether to commit to the youthful potential of Fields or the experienced leadership of Wilson.

Currently, the Steelers appear to view Wilson as the better option for immediate success, while Fields holds promise for the future. The extra reps have allowed the team to assess Fields more closely. As Wilson works towards full health, the quarterback battle between the two is heating up.
