The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense in the 2023 season was among the worst in the league, leading to a frustrating year for fans and prompting the organization to seek a new offensive coordinator. The Steelers decided to hire Arthur Smith, who brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Smith, who recently served as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, had a challenging tenure in Atlanta with a 7-10 record in each of his three seasons before being let go after the 2023 campaign. Despite these struggles, Smith had a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and 2020, where he earned praise for his impressive offensive strategies, which ultimately led to his head coaching opportunity.

The Steelers are excited to add a former head coach to their staff, believing Smith’s proven track record will be a significant asset. His first game with the Steelers will be a special one, as it pits him against the Falcons, the team that let him go. While Smith remains tight-lipped about his feelings, his former players, who now play for the Steelers, have hinted that Smith is eager for revenge. Jason Mackey spoke with MyCole Pruitt who knows Smith well. Pruitt believes Smith is eager to stick it to his former team.

"If I know Art, he’s definitely thought about that one. He wants to get back at ‘em. He wants to win every game, but when you’re playing your former team, you definitely circle that one."

It's no surprise that a former coach who was dismissed might want to prove his old team made a mistake. Nonetheless, it certainly adds an intriguing layer to the Week 1 matchup against the Falcons.

Additionally, another player who has played for Smith, Van Jefferson, shared insights into how he believes the offensive coordinator views this game, further fueling the interest surrounding this encounter.

"I’m pretty sure it’s in the back of his mind," Jefferson said.

The Steelers need a win against the Falcons for several crucial reasons. With a challenging 2024 schedule ahead, a victory in Week 1 against Atlanta is seen by many fans as a critical one.

The Steelers simply can't afford to get off to a slow start. The back half of their 2024 schedule is brutal. Pittsburgh will want to ensure they don't have a Week 1 showing like they did in 2023 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Steelers Viewed As Underdogs Against The Falcons

However, getting off to a hot start won't be an easy task. The Falcons made significant moves in the offseason, including adding veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, and they boast play-makers on both sides of the ball. Smith will face a formidable challenge against his former team.

Oddsmakers have the Steelers as three-point underdogs, with many analysts favoring the Falcons. Pittsburgh will be starting quarterback Russell Wilson, and Smith will be working with a new offensive scheme that may take time to fully integrate with the new personnel.

A strong start is essential for any NFL team, but for Smith, this game has added significance as a revenge match. The Steelers will aim to showcase their offensive capabilities and help Smith build confidence.

With so much at stake, a poor offensive performance could quickly shift the momentum against Smith. Conversely, a strong showing would boost both Smith's and the offense’s confidence. This matchup promises to be exciting and a must-watch for fans who love a compelling revenge narrative.
