The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves embroiled in an unexpected quarterback controversy when they brought both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on board this past offseason. The initial plan was to have Wilson mentor former first-round pick Kenny Pickett until he showed maturity and consistency on the field. When Pickett was unhappy with the arrangement and requested a trade, Pittsburgh made its own trade for Fields.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin has done all he can to avoid any talk of controversy. From day one, he stated that Wilson would start, at least initially, out of deference to his Super Bowl win and experience. That didn't stop the outpouring of cries for Fields to start. That was only fueled by Wilson's calf injury, which gave Fields the green light at the start of training camp.
It wasn't just those on the outside petitioning for Fields to be the Steelers starter; rumor has it that players inside the organization were making a case for him. The same report says Fields was amenable to the coaching he was given, including a return to the footwork he became so well known for in college. This willingness to grow reportedly had his teammates rallying the cry on his behalf.
However, there is another scenario that isn't an either/or, meaning it doesn't have to be all or nothing Wilson vs. Fields. In that case, the Steelers would still start Wilson, but utilize Fields in plays that take advantage of his strengths, namely his speed and ability to scramble. But what is the likelihood that the Black and Gold bring Fields in for gadget plays?

Ray Fittipaldo from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says it isn't very high. In his chat column, Fittipaldo was asked to predict whether Fields plays more or less than five plays against the Atlanta Falcons.
"I'll take the under," wrote Fittipaldo without hesitation.
This was despite Tomlin recently saying that he isn't against the idea of weaponizing Fields, noting that his talent is "intriguing" to the team. It is easy to see why they are curious. Fields became a first-round selection in 2021 because of his ability to mobilize. Steelers fans saw that same talent during the preseason when he was able to slip out of a sack, scramble, and connect with Dez Fitzpatrick on the sideline for a highlight play.

The Steelers are not known for using two quarterbacks, but they used to be revered for their gadget plays. That included one that helped them get a Super Bowl title. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger handed the ball to running back Willie Parker, who passed it to wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who threw it to fellow receiver Hines Ward for a touchdown that locked up their victory.
Steelers' Russell Wilson Got A New Title
Wilson wasn't just named the starting quarterback; it was announced that he would also be the offensive captain for the 2024 season. This received a lot of backlash from those who felt it didn't make sense to make your captain someone you may bench. However, the Steelers have done this before. They named Mitch Trubisky a captain in his first season, knowing that he might lose the job to Pickett.
Along with Wilson, Cameron Heyward, Miles Killebrew, and T.J. Watt were named captains. Since arriving in the Steel City, Wilson has been doing everything he can to change the public perception of him. He has been working out with his new teammates, attending all voluntary workouts, attending other sporting events in the city, and participating in new charities.

While his critics might say he is playing a political game, Wilson says he is genuinely thrilled to be in Pittsburgh and getting a fresh start. He is here on a one-year contract, so it makes sense that he would do as much as he can, as quickly as he can.
