The Pittsburgh Steelers have been searching for a true wide receiver to enhance their roster since they traded away Diontae Johnson. Initially, they hoped to acquire Brandon Aiyuk, but that deal fell through. Omar Khan then had an opportunity to make a significant trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for Davante Adams.

Ultimately, Adams was traded to the Steelers' Week 7 opponent, the New York Jets. Although the Steelers missed out on Adams, this trade may have presented another opportunity for them. In the 2024 offseason, the Jets acquired talented wide receiver Mike Williams. With the addition of Adams, Williams may now be available for trade.

NFL insider Dianna Russini reported on Thursday that the Steelers are one of the teams reaching out to the Jets regarding a potential trade for Williams.

The Steelers have been eager to strengthen their wide receiver corps, and through six games, it's clear that they need reinforcements. While George Pickens has shown he's a star in the making, the team still lacks another serious threat to challenge opposing secondaries.

Defenses have been able to focus their efforts on shutting down Pickens, making it easier to limit Pittsburgh’s passing game. Although Williams may not be on the level of Adams or Aiyuk, he would still be a significant upgrade for the Steelers if they can manage to pull off a trade.

Acquiring a wide receiver like Adams would have completely transformed the Steelers' offense. However, not everyone would be excited about a potential trade for Williams. While he’s a talented receiver, his history of injuries raises concerns. Another worry stems from a key moment during the Jets' Monday night game, where Williams had the opportunity to make a potential game-winning play.

Aaron Rodgers threw a deep pass to Williams, but according to Rodgers, Williams ran the wrong route and then slipped and fell. It was a disappointing moment for the Jets, and some believe it was the play that ultimately pushed the team to trade for Adams.

So far in the 2024 season, Williams has 10 catches for 145 yards and no touchdowns through six games. When compared to Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III, the numbers are interesting: Austin has 10 catches for 167 yards and one touchdown. This has left Steelers fans questioning whether Williams would truly be an upgrade.

Steelers Have A Legit Path To Trade For Jets' Mike Williams

Williams' future with the Jets is now in serious jeopardy, with many believing that the addition of Adams has effectively pushed him out. NFL insider Mike Garafolo provided an update on Thursday regarding Williams' status with the team.

Pittsburgh has a clear path to bolster its wide receiver corps if they pursue Williams. The cost to acquire him in a trade is likely low, making it an affordable option for the Steelers.

Williams would be considered an upgrade and would strengthen their wide receiver room. It’ll be interesting to see if the Steelers decide to make a move and bring Williams to the Steel City.
