Steelers' Justin Fields Blames Only Himself For Big Possibly Of Russell Wilson Starting Against Jets

Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin shocked many during his "Tomlin Tuesday" press conference heading into the Week 7 game against the New York Jets. He announced that he was giving quarterback Russell Wilson first-team reps this week for the first time this season after riding with Justin Fields through the first six weeks. Wilson has suffered from a lingering calf injury and was finally healthy enough to move up to the backup spot in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders

The decision to likely "bench" Fields has sharply divided the media and fans. Some support Fields, saying that he was almost the sole reason the Steelers pulled out a big win over the Raiders. Others say if Tomlin does start Wilson, he isn't benching Fields since it wasn't his job to begin with, saying this is no different than any other backup situation.

The question of how Fields feels about this has been looming large for many. While he has shown himself to be a consummate professional, it must sting to go 4-2 and not have that be good enough. He was able to give an answer about his thoughts to the press for the first time on Wednesday.

"If I’m being real with myself, if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of [question] who should be playing who should not," Fields said.

The topic of Fields' confidence has been raised repeatedly this season. After three demoralizing years with the Chicago Bears, those who know him feel like he is getting a fresh start in Pittsburgh, one where he would be appreciated. Even Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has commented that one of his primary concerns is rebuilding Fields' confidence.

While Tomlin has not announced a final decision, instead deferring as usual until closer to game time, most analysts feel that he wants to see what Wilson can bring to the table that Fields cannot. While Fields was able to pick up yards with his legs, there were clearly passes out there that he missed.

Steelers Players Ready To Support Whoever Is Under Center

As soon as Tomlin announced the potential change, rumors began to swirl on social media that people inside the organization were upset about Wilson taking over. That was according to NFL insider Albert Breer. CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala took it a step further on 93.7 The Fan, saying that it was players and coaches who were upset.

While he would not directly comment on that, Cameron Heyward, a longtime Steelers defender, said on his podcast, Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, that he is prepared to support whichever one is starting. He said they haven't been given any details, but he will personally ensure that his quarterback is put in positions to win games.

The Steelers' defense has done a remarkable job setting their quarterback up for success this season. They had three takeaways in each of their last two games. However, the offense and the defense have gotten off to slow starts this season. Perhaps Wilson can get the offense off to a hot start against the Jets.
