Report: Steelers Have Already Been Approached By Multiple Teams About Trading For Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers had an epic collapse to end the 2024 season. After five straight losses, including a defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round, fans voiced strong opinions. Many have demanded since that the team make significant changes, including moving on from Head Coach Mike Tomlin. With how the organization does business, there was virtually no chance that the franchise move on from him given the fact that he still has three years left on his contract after a 2024 extension. That left rumors in the air about him being involved in a rare coaching trade.

The Steelers' fan base got some pivotal news on Saturday morning regarding the situation, as respected NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that more than one team has reached out to Pittsburgh in the hopes of exploring a trade for the longest-tenured coach in the league.

Schefter's story on the subject detailed much more than his social media post. The main point of the topic at hand, however, is that the Steelers had a chance to engage in trade talks, and vehemently shut the idea down. Tomlin told teams that could potentially be interested in him to save their time, but it's apparent that the Chicago Bears wanted to kick the tires anyway. Tomlin's no-trade clause halted any conversations immediately, per Schefter.

"At least one other team besides the Bears checked into the idea that it could somehow could try to trade for Tomlin, only to be informed that the Steelers coach has a no-trade clause in his contract, according to a league source," Schefter wrote. "The inquiring team quickly halted its efforts and moved on, according to sources."

While the prospect of getting significant draft capital for Tomlin might be attractive for fans that have grown tired of playoff mediocrity, it's not going to happen, and any time soon for that matter. There is a strong possibility that Tomlin remains the Steelers' head coach through at least 2027, unless he decides to walk away from the team over the course of the next three years.

Steelers Must Find A Way To Force Tomlin To Change In 2025

The days of boasting a dominant defense and subpar offense are no longer effective in the NFL. Tomlin admitted in his end-of-season press conference that he is willing to adapt, so whether it is Art Rooney II or Omar Khan, someone inside the building needs to have a hard conversation with him about how he approaches the schematics of the game sooner rather than later. Roster construction throughout the 2025 offseason depends on it.
