The Pittsburgh Steelers are running out of time to re-sign a quarterback before the new league year gets underway. The legal tampering period will begin on the 10th of March, which means both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields can be begin to negotiate with other teams very soon. Recent reports have indicated that Fields is the preferred option, but the front office will have to make the perfect offer, given the fact that the 26-year-old is one of the more intriguing pending free agents. Fans should have a good idea going into the weekend if a contract is going to be agreed upon or not.

Plenty of pundits across the media landscape have tried to debate which quarterback the Steelers should focus on retaining, but it's relatively clear that, with a weak draft class, there are not many options out there. It would make the most sense to bring back a signal-caller that already has some experience playing in the Steel City and out of Arthur Smith's playbook.

Not many reporters on a national or local level are more plugged into what is going on inside the Steelers' building more than the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac. In a fan chat on Wednesday, he revealed that there is a deal in the works, but Pittsburgh is going about it quite slowly.

"Oh, it's imminent alright, but it's still being hashed out," Dulac wrote. "Quite ponderous I'd say."

This would imply that the Steelers are working to get a contract done by the time the legal tampering period begins. When asked again about the situation and if Fields would be signed on his birthday, which is Wednesday, Dulac noted that Fields might be getting a financial present a bit late.

"Not [Wednesday], but maybe belated," Dulac wrote.

Pittsburgh has to be attempting to make an offer attractive enough so that Fields wants to stay in the Steel City without testing free agency. There are plenty of teams that are in need of quarterback services, but the best situation for the former first-round pick is likely with the Steelers as he would be the unquestioned starter for the 2025 season.

Steelers quarterback Justin Fields runs off the playing surface following a Week 6 game against the Raiders in 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.

Fields had the pedigree of being a first-round pick and was impressive in his six starts for the organization in 2024. The Steelers have plenty of cap space in 2025 and beyond, which should make it rather easy to get a deal done if both parties are interested in locking one in before free agency begins. Fields provides mobility and athleticism, something that can't exactly be said for the veteran in Wilson.

Pittsburgh will look to have a healthy offensive line in 2025, which was a struggle throughout the 2024 campaign. If the front office can welcome Fields back and the quarterback has more weapons to distribute the ball to, the unit could be surprisingly dangerous. Once Fields is able to negotiate with other teams, however, the Steelers may lose him to the highest bidder.

The wait is almost over for Steelers fans everywhere, while fan bases of other organizations could be anxiously awaiting to see if Fields will indeed hit the free agency market. He would join Sam Darnold as one of the top available signal-callers.

Steelers Can't Let Other Dominos Fall Until A Clear Decision Is Made At Quarterback

From an offensive free agent's perspective, it makes no sense to be interested in Pittsburgh unless there is a legitimate number one quarterback signed and on the roster. That is currently not the case, which is why it is imperative for the franchise to sign either Fields or Wilson by the time the tampering period ramps up. There is not much time, but fans could have a solution to the situation imminently.
