Report: Steelers Could Lose Justin Fields As Quarterback Plans To Test Free Agency Market

The Pittsburgh Steelers are running out of time to re-sign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields prior to the legal tampering period beginning on Monday. The preference inside the organization is apparently Fields, but the 26-year-old is expected to have some interest due to the underwhelming quarterback crop in the 2025 NFL Draft class. If the front office can't get Fields to sign by Monday morning, it's extremely possible that a team like the New York Jets swoops in and offers him a lot more money. This would lead to a domino effect that could cause Pittsburgh's quarterback situation to be in disarray.

The Steelers have plenty of cap space to make a two-year deal work with Fields, but even if an offer on the table is generous, it's possible that his camp wants to see what else is out there. That is what will cause some major issues for Pittsburgh, especially because offensive free agents won't want to talk to a team on Monday that has no answers at the signal-caller position.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic posted on social media Saturday morning to update NFL fans on the current quarterback carousel. It will leave Steelers fans with a bad taste in their mouths.

Russini noted that Pittsburgh is working to get a deal done with Fields, but the athletic quarterback is expected to test the market. This could lead to a bidding war that has the Steelers hesitant to re-sign him. 

"Justin Fields, wanted back in Pittsburgh, is expected to test the market." Russini wrote.

No one really knows which direction the organization would go if Fields is lost to another team, but it would certainly cause some challenges. There are not many readily-available signal-callers out there, and the draft is not a place where many believe a long-term starter will be found outside of the top 10. The Steelers need to make Fields a priority over the course of the next 48 hours or so.

In the modern NFL, it is imperative for teams to have a talented quarterback to win consistently. The Steelers have failed to create that kind of situation for three seasons now. The fan base is becoming restless, and the organization does have a young option in Fields to give the keys of the kingdom to. Unfortunately, it seems as if the franchise is not willing to meet Fields' asking price as of the weekend prior to free agency beginning.

Steelers Could Have An Alternative Plan No One Knows About

If Pittsburgh fails to re-sign Fields or Wilson, there won't be too many other options when it comes to a starting quarterback in 2025. It has to make one wonder if something else is going on behind the scenes.

Time will tell what the Steelers decide to do, but there will be plenty of angry fans out there if a deal is not reached with the former first-round pick by Monday morning. This would leave plenty of questions with very few answers. It is becoming increasingly more likely that the team is internally eyeing up Aaron Rodgers as an option for at least one year. This would provide no legitimate long-term solution, which will cause less stability than desired by the black and gold faithful.
