The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting close to a deal with four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, per Steelers insider Gerry Dulac. Multiple sources confirm that Pittsburgh entered discussions with Rodgers and Sam Darnold after it became clear Justin Fields wanted to test his value in free agency.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin shakes hands with former New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers while Russell Wilson and Justin Fields look on after a home game in Pittsburgh.

With Fields potentially leaving and Russell Wilson's future uncertain, the Steelers are apparently very interested making a bold move to secure an experienced quarterback. Rodgers, despite being 41 years old, remains one of the most accomplished passers in NFL history. Tomlin and the Steelers clearly have interest in seeing if Rodgers has enough left in him to elevate their offense to Super Bowl contention.

Bringing Rodgers to Pittsburgh would be a highly controversial decision, given his age and his polarizing media lifestyle. However, the Steelers seem determined to add a veteran presence under center rather than just focusing on getting a deal done with Fields. Now that Fields has made it clear he's testing the market, the Steelers want to have a backup plan and it appears Rodgers and Darnold are that for Pittsburgh.

"The Steelers are getting close to a deal with four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, per multiple sources," Dulac posted on X. "They decided to enter discussions with Rodgers and Sam Darnold when it became apparent Justin Fields wanted to test his value in the free-agent market."

If finalized, this move would send shockwaves through the league and completely reshape Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation heading into the 2025 season. Steelers fans have strong opinions about bringing Fields back in 2025. He looked impressive in his six starts with Pittsburgh, despite being held back by an offense that didn’t allow him to audible. Many are eager to see what he could do over a full season with more freedom.

Steelers' Justin Fields

Steelers' Justin Fields arrives at training camp in Latrobe ahead of the 2024 season.

At just 26 years old, Fields represents a potential long-term solution, while Rodgers, at 41, would be a short-term fix. For many in Steeler Nation, Fields offers a future, whereas committing to an aging veteran is clearly a temporary move.

Rodgers is undoubtedly one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, but at this stage of his career, there’s no guarantee he can stay healthy or perform at an elite level. The potential acquisition of Rodgers presents an intriguing option for the Steelers, but even if he manages to perform at a high level, his shelf life is undeniably short at best. Given his age and injury history, relying on Rodgers could be a risky play for Pittsburgh. If the move doesn't pan out, the Steelers could find themselves in a desperate search for a quarterback by 2026, facing a steep rebuild at the position and quickly.

Steelers Bringing In Aaron Rodgers Would Be A Major Headache

Additionally, the drama that would accompany bringing Rodgers to the Steel City could create a major headache, distracting from the team’s focus and unity. This is why many Steelers fans would rather just see their team bring back Fields for the 2025 season.

Ultimately, this decision comes down to whether Pittsburgh wants a short-term gamble or a long-term investment. Fans seem to favor the latter, and with Fields hitting the open market, the Steelers may need to act quickly to bring him back before another team does.
