The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a monumental decision at the most crucial position in football: quarterback. Initially, the team appeared to have its sights set on bringing back 26-year-old Justin Fields, but after a better offer from the New York Jets, Fields opted to walk in free agency. Now, the Steelers find themselves scrambling to figure out who will lead their offense in the 2025 season.

In the 2024 season, Pittsburgh brought in both Russell Wilson and Fields, hoping to solidify their quarterback situation. While both quarterbacks showed glimpses of promise, neither did enough to warrant the hefty contract extensions they were hoping for. This lack of decisive play is one of the primary reasons the Steelers haven't made any progress on a new deal for Wilson. Despite the clear desire from Wilson to return in 2025, the organization seems hesitant to make that move.

On Thursday, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac appeared on The Rich Eisen Show to provide further insight into the team's uncertain quarterback situation. During the discussion, Dulac dropped a revealing statement, highlighting the significant issues some coaches within the Steelers organization would have if Wilson were to return as the team's starting quarterback in 2025. These concerns, according to Dulac, could have a major impact on the Steelers' decision-making as they look ahead to the future.

"Russ is always trying to be a leader, that's both offensively and defensively, and so I don't think the players would have a huge problem with him being back," Dulac said Thursday. "But there is no question that if that would happen, then Russell and Arthur Smith would have to be put in a room and sat down and told, 'Look, whatever differences occurred here at the end of the season, you guys better hammer it out, because this is the way it is, and if you don't, then there's gonna be a problem.'"

After the 2024 season wrapped up, reports surfaced suggesting that there were tensions between Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith and Wilson, with some claiming they had a troubling working relationship. While the severity of these reports remains unclear, according to Dulac, the situation could be more complicated than it seems.

Dulac revealed that while many players wouldn’t mind having Wilson back for the 2025 season, some coaches, potentially including Smith and others on the staff, might not be as eager. This internal divide could play a key role in the Steelers' decision-making as they evaluate their quarterback options for the future.

"So l don't know that the players would have an issue, maybe some of the coaches would have an issue," Dulac said. "But I don't know that it would be a problem internally in the locker room."

When Wilson arrived in Pittsburgh, he quickly embraced the team culture and established himself as a natural leader. He became the epitome of professionalism, especially when the Steelers brought in Fields. Wilson didn’t just focus on his own game but took Fields under his wing, offering mentorship and guidance.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Seems To Be Higher On Russell Wilson Than Other Coaches

His efforts to foster a positive dynamic in the quarterback room were evident, and it was clear that Wilson's leadership style made a lasting impact. Most notably, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin seems to have developed a strong appreciation for Wilson, appearing to value him more than some other coaches. Wilson’s influence within the team has been undeniable, showcasing his commitment to both individual and collective success.

The Steelers appear to be leaning toward acquiring 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with a potential deal reportedly on the table. However, the team is currently in a holding pattern, waiting for Rodgers to make his decision. Meanwhile, Rodgers is taking his time, leaving the Steelers in suspense.

At the same time, Wilson has other options, further complicating the Steelers' quarterback situation. With so much uncertainty hanging in the balance, Steelers fans are eagerly awaiting a resolution to see who will ultimately lead the team under center in 2025. If the Steelers do bring back Wilson, it will be super interesting to see the dynamic between him, Smith and the rest of the coaching staff.
